Calico
~Calico~
Once upon a time, this town was located about four miles northeast of where Martha Furnace stood. I don't know what became of the town,
why it was abandoned, but I am told there is almost nothing there now, that it has been swallowed up by the pines. According to former
residents interviewed by author Henry C. Beck, many of the residents worked at the paper mill in Harrisville,
and perhaps the closure of that mill was a factor in turning the community into a ghost town.
The following names are mentioned in his book, Forgotten Towns of South Jersey, as residents at Calico:
- Kirk Cramer. He was the son
of Ellen (Adams) and
Charles B. Cramer of New Gretna. (the name that the town of Bass River now goes by).
- Hugh O'Neill, who told Beck he was born near Calico and lived in a log cabin at Harrisville.
- Ellis Adams, father of the Ellen
Adams mentioned above that married Charles B. Cramer.
Evidently at one point in time, sheep were raised in Calico as well, according to Beck.
That is about all of the information I have come across regarding this place. If you know any more, please
send me an e-mail..
