Colemantown
Colemantown

This Mt Laurel Township town got it's name from a fellow named John Coleman, although I don't know anything about him at this point. It does not seem that there is any relation to the Coleman Family that resided in Batsto and the Washington Township area in the 19th century.

It was located about a half mile south of Mt. Laurel, and in 1883 there was a M.E. Church, a store run by Charles Erling, and about six residences. One of those residences was occupied by a Keziah Tillman, who was in excess of 80 years old when E.M. Woodward wrote of her in 1882.

I looked into Keziah Tillman, and found her on the 1880 census in Mt. Laurel Twp, Burlington County. Below is a brief snippet of that portion of the census; I can't be certain that this represents Colemantown necessarily, but there's a good chance that at least some of these people lived there. (I was unable to find Charles Erling on the New Jersey census anywhere in 1880; however, a few doors away from Keziah was Charles Easling. Either Woodward or the census enumerator likely made a spelling error).

*Charles Webb entry says he was "wounded", presumably in the Civil War.

Keziah Tillman did NOT live in Colemantown in 1880; she shows up (along with Isaac White) on the 1870 census in Evesham township. Just what, if anything, is there today I do not know. If you know something else about this place, please send me an e-mail at [email protected]
