A visitor to this site inquired about a town called Milmay; I had never heard of such a place and was hoping someone out there did. I know is that it still existed as of at least 1913, when an Italian family named DiFrancesco apparently resided there.
UPDATE: Another visitor to this site has recently informed me that Milmay is on route 40 East past Buena Between route 54 and route 555 towards Tuckahoe,NJ.
UPDATE: Yet another visitor has stopped by and given us this tidbit:
Milmay is a small town that sprung up on the road from Mays Landing to Millville - hence the name Milmay. A rail line from Philadelphia to Cape May ran through
the town and a train station existed there I think in the late 1800's or early 1900's. It was a planned community with streets laid out in grid pattern.
Most of the early residents were involved in farming. There was a small propaganda booklet made around the turn of the century enticing people to come and buy
property in Milmay. It contained pictures of many of the original homes. I think only one of the original homes remains.
Currently the town is home to several businesses, including two taverns. There is also a fire department and post office. It is a very very small community.
The town is unique in that it actually exist in two municipalities and two counties - Maurice River Township, Cumberland County and Buena Vista Township,
Atlantic County. Its zip code is 08340.
UPDATE: Another visitor stopped by last week and gave me this information regarding Milmay:
"I grew up in south Jersey and we used to take what my dad called the Dorothy - Milmay Road, to
Tuckahoe and then on south to the shore points, Ocean City, Sea Isle City etc.
This road is STILL there and I was on it over the summer. There doesn't seem to be any town in this area, but there is a fire house and a few gas stations and places to eat along the way.
Maybe the actual towns were off to either side of this road. Next time I'm in that area I will make it a point to stop and ask about the town of Milmay.
If you know anything at all about this town, I would greatly appreciate an e-mail.
