The 1865 Census for Washington Township was recorded by N.D. VanSant of Lower Bank. Unfortunately for us, not only was his penmanship sloppy and at times indecipherable, but there are a host of errors found on the census. We can determine these based on the fact in some cases that the same family appears on several of the other censuses with different information, and only in 1865 does the pertinent info not agree.
Presented here is the census as he enumerated it, with notes where I felt they were appropriate. This census gives us little info other than names ; it does not even number the houses or families so it is impossible to determine where one house ends and another begins. At best, it gives us a population count and perhaps some degree of continuity between the 1860 and 1870 censuses.
One additional note: This census does not provide specific ages; it only mentions if an individual is a child between the ages of 5-16; evidently those under 5 were not counted.

Our esteemed enumerator seems to have mistaken the first name for a last name and consequently gave the following individuals the last name of "Otto". Additionally, all other records indicate that Otto Wobbar was from Germany, whereas he is listed as a native born American on this census. | ||
