Excerpt from "The Silent Streams", by Harry Logsdon, 1950?, page 37 THE LOWES Our account of the early pioneers would hardly be complete without giving short sketches of several families who figured conspicuously in the settlement of "Lower Doughty" during the early 20's of the last century. One of these was that of Conrad Lowe and wife Margaret. His father, Mark [sic *] Lowe, was born and lived in eastern Pa. during the revolutionary war period, probably serving as a soldier part of this time. After the war, he and his family migrated to Westmoreland County Pa. Here the subject of our sketch, Conrad Lowe, was born in the year 1793 and his wife Margaret was born in 1794. Three of their children were Jacob, George and Polly. In the spring of 1824, they sold their land in Pa. and migrated to Doughty Valley and settled on a 160 a. tract lying on the south bank of the creek and drained largely by a branch of Oak Valley creek, a southern tributary of Doughty. One of his sons, Jacob, who was born in Pa. in 1817 married Catherine Lint in 1838. Upon the death of his father in 1848, he and his family took over the old homestead and resided there until his death in 1888. Soon after, one of his sons in law, Adam Fraelich, purchasedd the farm and lived there during his life time. It is now owned and occuped by an Amish family. The above Jacob and Catherine Lowe became the parents of thirteen children, all of whom grew to man and womanhood and married and raised families. Their names and marriages are as follows: Samuel, married Ottilo Frederick; Moses, Margaret Lautenschleger; Conrad, Elizabeth McCauslin; Henry, Hannah Cox; Jacob, Emma Jane Hall; Elizabeth, George Lautenschleger; Catherine, Jacob D. Lower; Leah, Adam Fralich; Margaret, John Strock; Amanda, Henry Lower; Polly, Don Lower; John, Mary Ann Sheneman; and George, May Lower. Another brother of Jacob Lowe Sr. George, purchased the 100 a. tract now owned and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Giauque, which he later sold to J.J. Conrad and moved to the Salem church community northwest of Clark. Nearly all of the Lowes in the Salem-Killbuck communities are descendants of this family. A cousin of the above brothers made a settlement on [a] 160 acre tract east of the Oak Hill Church and lived there during his lifetime. His name was Adam Lowe. THE CONRADS John Jacob Conrad... married Mary Lowe in the year, 1809. Mary Lowe was a daughter of Mark [sic *] Lowe and a sister of Conrad Lowe whose names have previously appeared in this sketch. * note Mary and Conrad were children of Henry Lowe, not Mark.
