Clinton County Republican-News June 30, 1927 WILL REBUILD ON SAME SITE BATH ACCEPTS SENATOR COUZENS' OFFER ON SCHOOL Discharge Awards Committee After Final Meeting Tuesday Night "My views are the school be put in same condition as before explosion. Have asked Warren Holmes (Lansing architect) to get in touch with you and report my views." The above, in the form of a telegram from Senator James Couzens of Detroit, was considered by the Bath school board at a short meeting last Thursday night. The board acted favorably and replied as follows: "We are pleased to accept your gracious offer to rebuild our school and accept same in behalf of the Bath Consolidated School District." Senator Couzens had visited the scene of the disaster a week before his telegram was received and at that time he reached the decision that the school should be rebuilt on the present site to obliterate the marks of the tragedy. The cost of the construction has been estimated from $80,000 to $100,000. Tuesday night the final meeting of the awards committee was held at the home of Mrs. L.A. Warner at Bath, according to C.S. Clark Sr., county Red Cross chairman. The entire committee was present and made six awards for the payment of funeral expenses, the necessary monies to be appropriated from the state fund. The committee was then discharged and all further awards will be made through Chairman Haarer of the governor's committee. "There is still enough left in the state fund to pay up hospital expenses and give some help toward the compensation that the school district will have to pay", says Mr. Clark. "However, one or two of the patients will require hospitalization over a long period of time and more money may be needed for this purpose. One youngster will undergo plastic surgery for several years and others may have to return to the hospital for further treatment from time to time."
