Clinton County Republican-News June 9, 1927 BATH CHILDREN SUFFER SHOCK Republican-News Fund Still Growing; Red Cross Is Busy The Republican-News Bath relief fund passed the $2,800 mark this week and new subscriptions are being made daily. The money has been deposited in a local bak (sic) and is awaiting the call of the governor's committee headed by John Haarer, chairman, of Lansing. Thursday morning Mr. Haarer said over the telphone that nothing yet has developed from the Senator Couzens offer - which some newspaper construed to mean that he would rebuild the Bath school. The premature and unauthenticated publicity given Senator Couzens' offer to help has cost the Bath relief fund many thousands of dollars in Mr. Haarer's opinion. Gov. Green conferred with the senator in Washington recently and is expecting the Detroit solon to come to Bath soon to look over the situation. Relief work is being carried on every day in Bath by the county Red Cross, according to Chairman Chas. S. Clark, Sr. Headquarters are open each forenoon for about two hours and a number of the children who were injured are brought in to have wounds dressed. Miss Whitlock is spending a part of each day at this work. In addition, Miss Olive B. Quinn, of Detroit, has been sent by the National Red Cross to do social work among the stricken families. The terrible shock and the grief has (sic) been such a blow to several families that expert attention is needed and Miss Guinn is doing this work. Several of the children, too, have shown signs of mental disorders resulting from the terrible experience they went through. Those who are close to the situation predict that it will be months before some of the children get back to normal, if ever.
