“Glenna Bird”
Date: 10/3/98

"I am descended from Simon Hoffman, b. 27 Oct 1775 in Middlesex, CT (LDS). He married 1 Oct 1795, Chloe Bunce [descendant of Thomas Bunce] b. 29 Jun 1778 in Hartford, CT. According to a Bunce family history they had 11 children. I know of four: [in a later message she sent me the names of all the 11 children from LDS Church records]

  1. Levi Billings Hoffman m. Angeline Warner of Bristol, VT;
  2. Mary Hoffman m. Eastman Case;
  3. Eliza Hoffman m. Almon Thomas;
  4. Sarah Ann Hoffman m.19 Sept 1843 Calvin Eastman Myers of Bristol, VT, and they are my g-g-grandparents.

“Sarah Ann’s DC gives Joseph Hoffman as her father. This is either an error or Simon died and Chloe married Joseph Hoffman, or both Simon and Chloe died and Joseph took his brother’s (son’s?) children to raise.”

Anita Stanford Bodman
Date: 10/24/98

“I got a copy of a family group sheet for a Jacob and Eunice (Satterlee) Bunce from a family treemaker CD a while back and just kept it in the hopes that one of their children were mine, especially since they had a Betsey mentioned. It now looks like it is the right family for me. I have just corresponded with a lady [Joyce Witt below] who has in her notes a Jacob Bunce and Rachel Satterlee who had a child Betsey BUNCE married to Giles (Gilles, Julies) STANFORD — Oneida/Lewis/Jefferson Co., N.Y. Betsey and Giles are my ancestors. She had actually received the information from a gentleman who had seen it in a book called, Satterlee-ley-ly and Allied Families, 1972 by Goldie Satterlee Moffatt.”

“Problem — I have seen a web site for a Rev. Bunce who married Eunice Satterly but dates are about one generation or two too far back for me. But, if I go with information from Crawford Co., Pa. Cemetery Inscription books I find a Rachel Bunce, wife of Jacob, who died 1860 at age 86. They had 17 children!! Poor woman. But have to tell you — no Peter Bunce in the list of kids.

“The Jacob Bunce who married Rachel Satterly was born abt 1774, which makes me wonder if he might have been Peter’s brother. Do you by any chance have info on the Bunce/Satterly line? And were there two Bunce men who married Satterly women a generation or two apart?"

[Notes:  Later, Anita kindly shared the results of her research with me, see Tables of Bunce Marriages.  She also posted information on her line at Pioneer Jacob Bunce and Rachel Satterlee Family, Rutland, Jefferson Co., New York.]

Mary Anne Britnell
Date: 7/16/98

“Just could not resist dropping a line. I have a Celab BUNCE born 20 Sept 1860 Beaconsville Buckinghamshire England. m. 1 unknown, m. 2 Martha BRITNELL (one child on record Daisy Kate b. 18 Feb 1895). m. 3. Ann, sister to Martha. Is there any connection that you know of? I do have a bit more info if of interest. I haven’t done a lot of research on Celeb. I just haven’t had the time to get to it. BRITNELL is my main line.”

Andrew Bunce
Date: 10/30/98

Researching his great grandfather Theodore Dwight Bunce. Back home in Mass. I know my folks have some older relatives recorded, but I can’t think of any just now.

Have you ever heard of him? I’d say he was born in about, oh, 1870 or so. My grandfather, his son, Alan Coe Bunce, was born in Westfield, NJ, so I imagine his father was probably from there too, but I’m not sure. You may find it interesting that Theodore Dwight Bunce invented a machine which tested the specific gravity of acid in car batteries which he called the Bunceometer! If you talk to people of a certain age you might run into people who have heard of it, because it was quite widely used in the early days of automobiles. (Today they call the device a Hydrometer Syringe, which is a far less interesting name, in my opinion).”

Brian Bunce
Date: 2/15/96

“I got your name off the internet and decided to write and see if you have any information on the Bunce family. My 2nd Great-Grandfather was Edward Bunce born 10 May 1829 in Marlborough, Wiltshire County, England. He came to America in 1833. Father’s name Charles Bunce. Any other information you want or need just ask. thank you.”

Richard R. Bunce
Date: 5/5/97

“I am trying to track the Bunce genealogy. I have been able to trace the Bunce genealogy back to Jacob Bunce who was born in New York state in 1788. He had one brother, James, and four sisters, Phoebe, Jarusia, Martha, and Sallie. Jacob was buried in Crawford County, Ohio in 1842. I am at a standstill in finding his parents and where they came from. But I feel certain they came from middle England.

“My Jacob Bunce had seven children. His first wife was Laura Wilcox; the children were Freeman, Lydia, Rhoda, James the 2nd (my line), Calista, Russel and Daniel. His second wife was Nancy Champion and they had 2 girls: Laura Martha 8/19/34, and Nancy Ann 6/18/1836. Daniel Bunce married Mary Ann Sanford and later a woman named Anna; he is buried in Michigan. Thanks. Richard Bunce, Kalamazoo, Michigan.”

“I found some things and wondered if you have any advice for me. I didn't know where my Bunces were from but I have now gotten a couple of names, places and dates. It is very little but I guess it is a start. Anyway I would appreciate some guidence if any of these sound familiar.

“William Henry Bunce b. 1828 NY m. Caroline Oslander b. 1830 Penn. Issue: William Everett Bunce b. 1865 (where?), d. 1894 Wisc., m. 1884 to Laura Virginia Taylor b. 11-25-1865 Maiden Rock, Wisc. d. 6-1-1963 SD.”

Dexter Edge, Jr.
Date: 12/14/97

Descendant of Thomas Bunce through his daughter, Sarah, who married Nicholas Worthington. “My BUNCE line daughters out with Sarah who ma. (2nd) Nicholas WORTHINGTON, and I haven’t followed the line much further.”

Joel Harrington
Date: 6/5/98

“Just a brief thank you for your Bunce family website. I found a dead on connection which takes me back to Thomas Bunce of Hartford. My Grandmother, Clara Frances Bunce (Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Co, NY) is descended thus:  Thomas—Sgt. John—John Jr.—Isaac—Roderick (Rory)—Peris—Lester Fenn—Clara. Thank you again. Your site connected Roderick back in time for me. If I can be of any assistance, let me know.”

Walter Heidenreich
Date: 7/16/98

“My wife’s name was Audrey Bunce from Coldwater, Mich. born 1924. I have traced her Bunce family back to New York state to about 1795. But no particular town. Where is your family from.”

Tina Kelley
Date: 12/22/96

“My father, Frank Kelley, has information on the Bunce family and can be contacted at 23 Tingley Road, Morristown, NJ 07960. He is not on-line, but we were surfing the web for Bunce and Geneology and found you. He has Edward Bunce in Long Island, d. 1696, and other Bunces in Connecticut and Long Island.”

[Note:  Another long-time Bunce researcher, who has probably passed away, Mrs. Harriet Davis of Long Island, NY, wrote me that she and Alice K. Howard of Mass. had never found any connection between the Bunces on Long Island and those who descended from Thomas Bunce of Connecticut.  However, there was a connection between Connecticut and Long Island as noted in these messages posted to the defunct National Genealogical Echo.]

"Richard A. McCool"
Date: 11/10/98

“For a compilation on the Duryea/Duryee family, I am trying to obtain more complete information on the couple ZEPHANIAH WEBSTER BUNCE, born 14 Nov 1787, died 7 Oct 1889, son of Thomas BUNCE and Mary DRAKE, who married 13 September 1827 Laura Ann DURYEA, and had eight children [Descendants of John Drake of Windsor, Connecticut:97. (1933)].

“Laura Ann Duryea, or Duryee, is perhaps the daughter of John DURYEE and Ann ‘Nancy’ MUMFORD, of New York City. Ann Mumford’s father was David MUMFORD, a merchant in New York City, with ties to New Haven, Connecticut, where, in fact, John DURYEE and Ann MUMFORD had been married in 1797. David DURYEA, of Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut, might be a sibling of Laura Ann Duryea.

“Because of Zephaniah’s ‘advanced’ age when married to Laura Ann, this was perhaps not his first marriage.

“I would be grateful to you or any of your readers for any suggestions on where best to find additional information on this Bunce line.

Richard A. McCool, Columbus, OH”

“Helen B. (Bunce) McDonald”
Date: 11/16/98

“I just found your Bunce genealogy. My maiden name is Bunce.

“I have all female lines back except Wilder, if you want them.

“The lines I am stuck on are Frances Wilder married to Zebe Bunce—father is Francis and mother is Maryann Moulton; ancestry of Rena Glass married to Vernon Bunce—father is Lorenzo and Sophia Greenley—I have the Greenley but only have Lorenzo’s father James married to Parthena Woodward—do have Woodward line.”

[Notes:  Helen Bunce later sent me a large envelope with information on her line, which is incorporated into my section on the family of Thomas Bunce of Hartford. Helen also created her own website on her Bunce lineage at Pioneer Theodore Bunce Family, Adams, Jefferson Co., New York.]

John Rogers Platt
Date: 3/21/98

“I have a few Bunce names in my family; not many. One of my ancestors, Henry Platt b. 1760 d. 1829 in Pleasant Valley NY, married a Deborah Bunce. Henry's father, Eliphalet Platt (7/12/1733 Huntington, Long Island NY d. abt 1737 prob. in Pleasant Valley) had a Mrs. Bunce as his 3rd wife. There were several Platts who went from the New Haven/Milford CT area and thence eventually into NY state; I would be glad to send you what I have if you think there’s a connection.”

[Note: Interestingly, the wife of my g.g.uncle Loomis Bunce, was Mary Holmes who was said to have been the daughter of a Wm. Holmes of Steuben Co., NY. I later discovered in the obituary of their daughter, Eliza Ann (Bunce) Lord, that she was born in Pleasant Valley, Steuben Co., New York, which may have also been the childhood home of her mother. Curious connection! However, there appear to be at least 5 towns/villages named “Pleasant Valley,” according to the now defunct website US City and County locator - FIPS 55-3 QUERY in New York state, and there’s no record in this message in which county the Platt family resided; however, it is well known that family members often emigrated together, and the connection of the Platt family to a town in Connecticut is interesting.]

Judith Powers
Date: 4/1-2/98

“I’m working on the geneology of my mother’s father, who was a Bunce. I have the line traced back to John Bunce who was born August 8, 1725 and died in 1798 (married Phoebe Smith in 1753). He lived on Long Island as did a lot of his family until William Henry Bunce (his great grandson, born August 25, 1811) relocated to Wisconsin.

“I can’t see any connection between your family and mine, based on the information on your Website (except maybe that about Thomas Bunce). It’s possible we’re connected somewhere back beyond the late 1700s, though. I’m wondering if you’ve run into any lines of the family centered in Long Island—

“Thanks for your response to my message. It helps to know that earlier researchers have found no link between the Long Island Bunces and Thomas Bunce, the proprietor from Connecticut. My aunt, formerly Ivagene Bunce (now in her mid 80s), has been working on trying to get our line back beyond John Bunce (1725) for some time. I’m pretty sure she’s corresponded with one or the other of the women you mentioned from Long Island—I have to ask her which one (she has our records back in Wisconsin right now). My aunt’s problem has been getting anyone from local historical societies to respond to her inquiries.”

“Gloria at RWR Well Service”
Date: 5/5/98

“I am writing for my sister-in-law who has an old Bible with the names and birthdates of at least 12 Bunces and some dates of death. The first name is Valentine &&!51; Sept. 30, 1821 the last name is Aruthur M. June 3, 1872. If you think this could be some of your relative we would be glad to share with you. The other name in the Bible is Peabody. IF interested let me know.”

“Bonnie, it says Lina Bunce of Gray NY born July 17, 1858 and died April 23, 1885 at Denver, CO. That is all the information she wrote on this piece of paper. I have not seen the Bible myself. She says it is a large Bible. Gloria”

“I came across your web site while looking for the surname ‘Bunce.’ My Great Great Grandfather had a sister Laura Lockhart, who married a Harry Bunce in Connecticut. They had two children Harry Jr., and Sevilla E. ‘Libby’ Bunce. I am looking for more information on them. I have two dates that I think are birthdates Harry=26 Sept, Libby=10 Sept, no year attached. These come from the backs of some pictures I have of Harry Sr., Laura, Harry Jr., and Libby. Any help you can give me would be great. I am looking for any descendants, and info on Laura Lockhart’s mom.”

Lee Weller

As far as he knows, Lee Weller’s Bunce connection is his g.g.g.g.grandmother Eliza Bunce (b.c. 1757), came from NC to IL; she was the wife of Zadek Smith. Their dau. Charity m. John Lee in 1820 in Bond Co. IL. See link to GenForum above, as Lee has also posted a message there [Update: messages for GenForum are now on the Genealogy.com website], but his email address is not recorded there.

Joyce Witt

“I am researching Edwin Satterly BUNCE b. Aug. 1819 Chautauqua Co., NY d. 29 Sept. 1903 Minneapolis, Minnesota md. 15 Apr. 1845 Lorain Co., OH to Emily Barber who was born Burkhampsted CT 1815. She died Buffalo, Minnesota 1894. Edwin was a pioneer circuit rider for the Methodist Church through Wisconsin and Minnesota. I have diaries, letters and such on this family. But have not been able to connect Edwin to a parent. Possibility is a William Bunce and Sarah Hamilton in Hanover Twp. Chautauqua Co., NY. They had two daughters Mary Elvina 10 July 1821 and Laura Jane 2 Sept. 1831, Villania Twp. Chaut. Co., in the 1820-1830 census it could include Edwin. Mary married in Ohio 1843 to John A. Hovey in Ohio. In one of Edwin's letters to Emily at this time period he mentions that his sister is getting married in two weeks. There are lots of Barbers and Bunces in Ohio at that time, but I have not been able to connect either with the parent. Have you ever run across this family?”
