Some Descendants of The Waite Family of Watertown, Massachusetts 1608-1838 |
Introduction: This is not a complete record of ALL the descendants of the WAITE (other spellings: WAIGHT, WAIT, WAITT) families of Watertown, Massachusetts and neighboring towns; it is mostly my direct line, 8 generations, over 200 names, which also shows the connection to my Burnap and Cole lines. You may use the search or find feature on your web browser to look for a specific name. My most recent ancestor on the Waite line is Bethia (WAITE) BURNAP, wife of Timothy BURNAP, my fourth great grandparents, parents of Polly (Burnap) Cole. I have placed hyperlinks between the names of individuals in my direct line. See the Sources below for books I used to compile this record. You can also see the COLE LINE in the online edition of Bunce Genealogy and History along with the online supplements to follow the Cole line further. See also History of Watertown, Massachusetts by Henry Bond record on this Waite family, and also Waite Genealogy.
Richard Waight born about 1608, Wethersfield, Essex Co., England?, married Mary ______, born ca. 1606, died 21 Jan 1678/9, Watertown, Massachusetts. Richard died 16 Jan 1668/9 at Watertown, Massachusetts. [NOTE: Information on Richard Waight and his descendants (children, grandchildren and great grandchildren) is from the book, Genealogies of the Families and Descendants of the Early Settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts, including Waltham and Weston; to which is appended the early history of the town, with Illustrations, maps and notes, by Henry Bond, M.D., published by the New England Historic-Genealogical Society (Two Volumes in One) 1860, pp. 617-18.] Their children were:
John Waight, born 6 May 1639, Watertown, Massachusetts, married 13 Jan 1663/4, in Watertown, Massachusetts, Mary Woodward, who died 21 Jan 1718, Watertown, Massachusetts. John died 24 Jun 1722, Watertown, Massachusetts. Their children were:
Thomas Waight, born 3 Mar 1641/2, Watertown, Massachusetts, married Sarah ______, born ca. 1654, died 17 Jan 1743/44, Weston, Massachusetts. Thomas died 3 Jan 1722/3, Weston, Massachusetts. Their children were:
Joseph Waight (also Waite), born 1643, Watertown, Massachusetts, married about 1675, Ruhamah Hagar, born 20 Nov 1647, Watertown, Massachusetts, daughter of William and Mary (Bemis) Hagar, who may have been the same woman in this record: “Wait, Mrs. Reuhamy, widow, d. 1 Feb 1736,” at Westborough, Worcester Co., Mass. In the preface to the book, Vital Records of Sutton, Mass. to the end of the year 1849, it states that “A part was annexed to Westborough, June 5, 1728,” which illustrates how close these two towns are. Joseph died March, 1726, Marlborough, Essex Co., Massachusetts. Their children were:
John Waight, Jr., born 27 Dec 1669, Watertown, Massachusetts, married Mary ______, died 23 Aug 1718, Weston, Massachusetts. John died 24 Jun 1722, Weston, Massachusetts. Their children were:
Amos Waight, born 4 Jan 1679/80, Watertown, Massachusetts, married August, 1701, Elizabeth Cutting. Their children were:
Joseph Waight, (also Waite) born 4 Feb 1682/3, married Sarah ______. Joseph died 5 Oct 1753, Worcester, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. Their children were:
William Waight (also Waite), born 20 Sep 1679, Marlborough, Essex Co., Massachusetts, married Abial Tomblen 22 Apr 1700 at Dedham, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts [per Richard Waite of Watertown, Massachusetts]. William died at Sherborn, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. On p. 617-19 of Genealogies of Early Settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts, by Henry Bond, M.D., it states: “William Waite, b. 1679; of Marlboro, and of Sherburne; m. Abial ______” Yet in the Marlborough Vital Records to 1850 book, William’s wife is called “Abiah,” not Abial. Their children were:
In support of this theory I quote from an email dated 3 Oct 2001, from Sally Bolster Holcombe:
I believe that I might have the probate documentation you need to prove that Hepsibah Wait(e), is both the sister of Gershom Wait(e) and wife of Isaac Bolster. Hepsibah Wait was Isaac Bolster’s second wife (I am descended from the first son of Isaac’s first marriage to Abigail Bullard). Isaac m. Hepsibah 4 Jun 1735, Uxbridge, Worcester Co., MA. There is an entry in Vital Records of Uxbridge to the Year 1850, Thomas Baldwin, compiler, published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society, p. 33. She and Isaac had three children:
William Bolster, (soldier in Colonial Wars, Loyalist Lieut.), b. 10 Mar 1736, Uxbridge, Worcester Co., MA; d. aft. 1794, Baltimore, Baltimore Co., MD.
Isaac Bolster, Capt. (Rev. War Minute Man), b. 28 Apr 1737, Uxbridge, Worcester Co., MA; d. 27 Apr 1825, Paris, Oxford Co., Maine.
Betty Bolster, b. Dec 1740, Uxbridge, Worcester Co., MA; d. 5 Jun 1741, Uxbridge, Worcester Co., MA, a month before the death of her mother.
Hepsibah WAIT, d. 20 Jul 1741, Uxbridge, Worcester Co., Massachusetts) — her death is in Vital Records of Uxbridge to the Year 1850. 4 Feb 1742, at Uxbridge, Worcester Co., MA, Isaac Bolster m. wife #3, Susannah Smith (of Leicester, Worcester Co., MA) — this marriage is also in Vital Records of Uxbridge to the Year 1850. They were married about 11 years before Isaac d. 28 Apr 1753. Isaac d. intestate. In his probate records (which I have copies of) is the settlement of real estate and monies between Susannah, widow of Isaac, Richard (Isaac’s first son by his first wife), John (Isaac’s second son by his first wife) and is a signature which says “Gershom ‘his mark’ Wait, guardian of William and Isaac Bolster.” I also have copies of the documents making Gershom Wait guardian of William (aged 17 at the time of his father’s death) and Isaac (age 16 at time of his father’s death).
Rebecca Waight (also Waite), born 29 Jun 1709, Sherborn, Essex Co., Massachusetts, died 12 Sep 1714, Sherborn, Essex Co., Massachusetts.
Abial Waight (also Waite), born 18 Nov 1711, Sherborn, Essex Co., Massachusetts.
Betty Waight (also Waite), born 31 Aug 1714, Sherborn, Essex Co., Massachusetts, married 3 Feb 1731/32, in Sutton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, Elisha Barton.
Gershom Wait(e), born 4 Feb 1700/01, Marlborough, Essex Co., Massachusetts, married 4 Oct 1723, in Sutton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, Johannah Rockwood (also Rocket), born 2_ Dec 1693, Medfield, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts, a daughter of Josiah and Marie (Twichell) Rockwood. According to the website Waite Genealogy, Gershom died in November, 1784, probably at Millbury, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. In the book, Centennial History of Millbury, Massachusetts, it says on pp. 34-35 Garshom Waite had a farm in the 2nd Precinct of Sutton in 1742, or northern part of the town, which later was set off from Sutton as Millbury. On p. 307, the names of Gersham and Joanna Wait appear on a list of members of the Second Congregational Church of Sutton, now Millbury, when the church was organized in 1747. No record has been found of the dates of death of Gershom and Joanna (Rocket) Waite in the Millbury or Sutton Vital Records books, so they may have moved from the area prior to their deaths. Their children were:
11. William Wait(e), born 4 Sep 1725.
Josiah Wait(e), born 14 Jan 1728, Sutton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.
Mehetabel Wait(e), born 27 Mar 1731, Sutton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, married 13 Feb 1750/1, in Sutton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, Jonathan Dunnill, Jr.
Jason Waite (also Waight), born 23 Nov 1702, Marlborough, Essex Co., Massachusetts, married Mercy ______. While there is no concrete evidence that Jason Waite, a younger brother of the Gershom Waite born in Marlborough, came to live in the Sutton-Millbury area, there are records of four children in the book, Vital Records of Sutton, Massachusetts to the end of the Year 1849, whose father was named Jason Waite. No mother’s name was given. Yet Jason Waite, also son of William Waite, was born in 1702, and might have been married and starting a family by 1728. In the book on Vital Records of Grafton, Massachusetts to end of 1849, there is a record of a son William Wait b. 1739 to Jason and Mercy. Their children were:
______ Waite, child of Jason, baptized 8 Mar 1729/30, Sutton.
Mary Waite, baptized 26 Mar 1732, in Sutton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.
Barnet Waite, baptized 15 Sep 1734, in Sutton.
Jason Waite, Jr., baptized 12 Sep 1736, in Sutton (probably one who moved with his father to Alstead, N.H. and died in Westmoreland, New Hampshire. While researching what connection my third g.grandfather Webster Cole may have had to Alstead, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire, since the record of his marriage to Polly Burnap in the book Vital Records of Sutton, Massachusetts to the End of the Year 1849, states he was “of Alsted, N.H.,” I found a record of a Jason Wait who came to Alstead as one of the earliest settlers, along with his father Jason Wait, Sr. and they were from Grafton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, so it appears Jason Wait and his son left Grafton and moved to Alstead. Grafton is near Sutton. Also, there is a record in the Grafton Vital Records for the marriage of Jason Waite to Hannah Axtell, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Sherman) Axtell, on 11 Nov 1763. Below are quotes from books on Alstead, New Hampshire:
Excerpt from book, New Hampshire borns a town by Mrs. Marion Nicholl Rawson, E. P. Dutton and Company, Inc., New York, ©1942, pp. 38-39:SOME OTHER FIRSTS
Included in that first famous triumvirate of initial settlers is Simon Baker who came from an unknown town and settled a mile and a half west of midel [sic] Town. After these hallowed group of three, Druce, Cady and Bacon, whose coming was probably in 1764, we have Deacon Joseph Warner, settling a half mile southeast, and Jason Wait and his old father breaking ground halfway up the northwestern side of the great central hill. It was Jason who was to become The Town’s outstanding soldier in the war against the Mother Country. He and William Druce being both Graftonites were doubtless cronies back home. [Emphasis added.]
We shall hear often of another of the early arrivers, Timothy Delano, who made his home a half mile south of midel [sic] Town and started at once to build a great barn and erect a mill on the stream that favored his farm. With Timothy was Barnabas, his brother—Barnabase of the beautiful penmanship—and brother Gideon, while other brothers came tramping in later to take part in the new venture.
The second group, which arrived in 1766 but after Town Meeting Day, consisted of Altogether from 1765 until 1780, there were roughly about sixty-two families settled into to [sic] stay, and this without counting some bachelors who did their own cooking, and others who came and went and perhaps came again to lend a strong hand in the settling.
Excerpts from A Sermon preached at Alstead on the First sabbath in Jan. 1826 with Historical sketches of the town by Seth Aronold (first town historian), p. 24:
Maj. Jason Wait came from Grafton, Mass. to this place in the early part of its settlement; and was a brother of Doct. Wait, who was killed in the battle of Bunker’s Hill. He married Miss Axtell, of Grafton, by whom he had one son and one daughter. His father came with him, and died 1784 in the 82d year of his age. Maj. W. went forth into the military service of his country; was promoted to the rank of a captain, by Col. Wait, of Claremont, and afterwards to that of major. He was taken by the enemy; and at the capture of Burgoyne, he was retaken. He died in Westmoreland sometime since the close of the Revolutionary War. [Emphasis added.]
p. 45: Other Things Worthy of Notice.
The first company of militia in town was formed in 1773. Timothy Dilano was chosen captain; Samuel Chandler lieutenant, and Jason Wait ensign. At present there are three companies of militia in town, one of which is an artillery company. This was formed from a company of light infantry, which was originally organized under Elijah Holbrook, as the first captain. [Emphasis added.]
William Wait, baptized 23 Apr 1739, Grafton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.
William Wait(e), born 4 Sep 1725, Sutton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, married 24 Oct 1744, in Sutton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, Ruth Lovell, born 16 Jan 1724, Sutton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, a daughter of Thomas and Martha (Herrick) Lovell, died 1 Nov 1815, Millbury, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, was buried in the Providence Street Cemetery, Millbury, Mass. William died 30 Apr 1807, Millbury, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, was buried in the Providence Street Cemetery, Millbury, Mass. On pp. 59-60 of the Centennial History of Millbury, Mass. including Vital Statistics, 1850-99, there is a list of men who were: “Officers and Soldiers in Capt. Greenwood’s Comp. of the Militia and in Col. Learned’s Regiment that marched from Sutton to Roxbury on the twentieth of April, 1775, in defense of this colony '” One of the names on this list was William Waite, but it would be hard to tell, solely from this record, whether this was the senior or junior William Waite. The list also names Asa Waite. On pp. 500-01 of the same book, there is a record of the graves at the Providence Street or Country Bridge Cemetery. On this list appeared the following gravestone records: “Ruth Waitt, wife of William, d. Nov. 2, 1815, age 91,” and “William Waitt, died April 30, 1807, age 82.” Their children were:

Hawley, born about 1841, Pennsylvania, died after 1885. Leonard died 11 Aug 1885, Leominster, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. According to a record found on a defunct web site, Leominster Vital Records After 1850, Maria R. (Hawley) Cole married (2) Waldo Whitney, in Leominster, on 30 Dec 1890.
Children by Mary Harris:
Mary Ann Cole, born 13 Aug 1844, Leominster, died 2 Sep 1845, Leominster, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.

Married (2) Antoinette E. Boyden in Leominster on 24 Apr 1900, and she died prior to his death in 1920, since her name is not in his will or probate record. [My (Bonnie Bunce’s) g.grandfather]
Elvira Lawrence Cole, born 5 May 1849, married Mr. ______ Bell.
Mary Ellen (“Nellie”) Cole, born 23 Oct 1853, married Isaac Charron in Leominster, 31 Dec 1877.
Henry Albert Cole, born 7 May 1866 and died 2 May 1856, at Leominster. Charles C. Cole told Leslie R. Bunce, his son-in-law, about his family, and among other things, he stated his grandfather, Leonard Cole, had had a son named Albert, who died young. It appears that Henry was that son.
Carrie L. Cole, born about 1860, Leominster, Worcester Co., Mass., married (1) J. E. Bowen of of Lansingburg, Rensselaer Co., New York, on 23 Apr 1889, in Leominster, Mass. and married (2) Mr. Charles Cloughtman. Carrie L. Cole is shown to be a resident of Leominster, Worcester Co., Massachusetts in the probate record for her father dated 1885. Apparently she was unmarried at that time, as her last name appears as “Cole.”
Elizabeth Luella (“Lizzie”) Cole, born 23 Sep 1857, Leominster, Mass., married Mr. Clay. Elizabeth L. Cole was shown as residing in Leominster, Mass. in the 1885 probate record for her father, Leonard Cole. She apparently was unmarried at that time, as her surname was shown as “Cole.” She must have married a Mr. Clay after August, 1885. Charles C. Cole said that his aunt Elizabeth L. Cole had 4 or 5 children, but apparently didn’t remember their names. Source for information on “Lizzie Cole” Bunce Genealogy and History by L.R. Bunce and V.E. Bunce, © 1977, pg. 84.
Nancy Towne Cole was born 5 Dec 1814, Millbury, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, and married Lucius Barns there on 22 May 1838. The family of Lucius Barns appears on the 1850 census of Hardwick, Worcester Co., Massachusetts on pg. 346, 174/195, and reads as follows:
Lucius Barnes, age 37, M, farmer, value of real estate $900, born in Massachusetts Nancy Barnes, age 35, female, born in Massachusetts Lucius E. Barnes, age 8, M, born in Massachusetts Luther E. Barnes, age 6, M, born in Massachusetts Elizabeth Newton, age 62, F, born in Massachusetts [Her relationship to the Barnes/Barns family is unknown.] |
Additionally, the following is from History of Hardwick, Massachusetts With Genealogical Register by Lucius R. Paige, published by Houghton, Mifflin & Co. 1883, p. 332:
“11. Lucius [Barnes, also Barns] married Nancy Cole of Millbury, published May 6, 1838 [date of intent], and had Elmer L., born about 1841 married Huldah H. Sturtevant 8 Jan 1864; Luther Emerson, born 19 Nov 1843, a lawyer, married Maria L. Sheldon of Leominster 8 Ap. 1874; and perhaps others.”
William Eddy Cole was born 27 May 1817, at Sutton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, married 24 Nov 1842, in Sutton, Susan Henry, born 16 Feb 1821, died 4 Feb 1876. William Eddy Cole contributed a section on the Burnap family to the book entitled, History of the Town of Sutton, Massachusetts from 1704 to 1876 . According to a record found on a defunct website, Leominster Vital Records After 1850: “William E. Cole, d. June 13, 1899, age 82y 17d. Died elsewhere—buried in L[eominster].” The book, Vital Records of Sutton, Massachusetts to the End of the Year 1849 states on p. 234 that Susan Henry, wife of William Eddy Cole, was “of Fitchburg,” but a record was found showing she was born in Lunenburg, the daughter of John Henry Jr. and his wife Mary Harris, a daughter of William and Elizabeth (Longford) Harris, so Susanna Henry was a cousin of the first wife of Leonard’s first wife. Their children were:
John Smith Burnap, born 3 Jun 1824, married 24 Nov 1853, Minerva Hall, born 5 Apr 1829, Uxbridge, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. Their children were:
