THE BARRELL FAMILY


Elizabeth Hopton (née Barrell), and her husband Edwin Hopton
departed London on 20th July 1857 aboard the "Sydenham" and arrived at Hobson's Bay (Victoria), Australia on 3rd November 1857.

They brought their two children with them: Edith Maria (1855), and William Henry Dickson (1856), and Elizabeth's Sister-in-law, Caroline Barrell (née Davis), her husband having arrived in Australia a couple of months before, with the idea that he could find lodgings for them.

Elizabeth Hopton née Barrell

James Barrell (1755-1824) married Elizabeth Powell (1755-1802) in Leominster, Herefordshire, on 2nd January 1780. James and Elizabeth lived in Kington (near the Welsh border) and had seven children, Francis (1781), James (1783), Elizabeth (1785), Charlotte (1789), George (1792), John (1795) and William Henry (1798). James was the first printer in Kington.

William Henry Barrell married Jemima Pearce at Titley, Herefordshire on 2nd December 1826. They had five children, James (1827) who married Mary Ann Austin, Elizabeth (1829) who married Edwin Hopton, Charlotte (1830) who married Thomas Northcott, William (1831) who married Caroline Davis, and Annie (1833) who married Henry Dainton.

Elizabeth married Edwin Hopton at St. John's Church, Paddington, London on 26th September 1854. They had ten children, Edith Maria (1855) who married William Hewitt, William Henry Dickson (1856) who married Jessie Sarah Ellis, Martha Emmeline (1859), Florence Elizabeth (1861) who married Stephen Thomas Brown Woodward, Alfred Edwin (1862) who married Sarah Wellwood, Charlotte Augusta (1864), Theresa Kate (1866) who married Herbert Sydney Hammet, Alice Maude (1868), Thirza Myrtilla (1870) and Stella Louise (1871) who married William Francis Burdett.

The family lived in Richmond for a short time before moving to Geelong. The Hoptons were to become well-known identities in Geelong. They lived for some years at "Swanville" on the Moorabool River at Fyansford before moving to a property known as "Woodlands" also at Fyansford.

Edwin and Elizabeth retired to "Amhurst" in Armadale, Melbourne where they celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1904. Edwin died in 1909 and Elizabeth in 1914 - both are buried in Boroondara Cemetery, Kew.

Williams Barrell married Caroline Davis at Stroud, Gloucestershire on 27th March, 1855. They had one daughter Edith Elizabeth (1863) who married William Edward Hunter in 1904. William and Carrie lived for many years at Daylesford, Victoria where they had land. He is listed as having various occupations during those years. They both died in Melbourne.
