Ethel Mary CHAPIN

   General Notes:

Ethel Mary Chapin was born November 13, 1886 at the Chapin home in Eden, Michigan. She lived all of her growing up years at the farm homestead on Barnes road which had been settled by her ancestors in 1843 when they moved from New York State. She attended school in the little one room schoolhouse just 1/4 mile from her home with her three brothers and two sisters. She attended high school in Mason, Michigan and after the 10th grade qualified for a sub freshman course at MAC (Michigan Agricultural College) in East Lansing. She was about 20 years younger. In 1907 a fiance, Earl Roscoe Dodge, was killed in a streetcar accident in Detroit. I believe she mourned his death for many years and was sure she would continue to be unmarried until she met my father who had built a beautiful home just before his first wife died. As a new bride she moved into a brand new home and resigned a teaching position in the St. Johns school system.

Ethel married Charles Spencer CLARK, son of William Henry CLARK and Katherine Maria MARSH, on 21 Jun 1924 in St. Johns, Clinton Co., MI ¹. (Charles Spencer CLARK was born on 12 Nov 1865 in Mason, Ingham Co., MI ^{2 5}, died on 30 Oct 1940 in St. Johns, Clinton Co., MI and was buried in Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, Clinton Co., MI.) The cause of death was Carcinoma of left parotid gland.
