Using DNA for Genealogy

In my hunt for the family of John Beach Snr, I've hit a bit of a wall. Family rumour suggests that John Beach Snr ran away from home when he was young, and the lack of any record of his birth makes me think he may well have changed his surname. Something he could have done without any paperwork back then!

So I've starting looking into DNA as a possible way forward here. The "Y" chromosome in DNA follows the male line, just like the surname traditionally does. I'm therefore thinking to use it to trace my "real" surname from pre-1840.

One of the issues I've come across, is that lots of companies offer DNA profiling, but it isn't clear on how many "markers" you should be buying for the period of time you are interested in. This page aims to document what I learn on DNA.
