In the 1850 U.S. Census for Scott County, Virginia,
the family farm of David and Martha Jessee lists 11 children
including Archibald Jessee, age 20. Next door, is the family farm for the Purcell family, which includes Mary Ann Purcell, age 16. Family legend has it that Archie and Mary Ann rode a "white Mule" over the mountain to Tennessee to get married that year. In the 1860 census, Archie and Mary Ann are still living in Scott County, Mary Ann has borne 5 children, ranging in age from 9 months, to 9 years. Their oldest child is Sarah, 9, who will marry John Addington and move to Kansas. Other Jessee's will follow. One of them will be Linc Jessee who will marry Odie Wildey and have Harry Jessee, Rexene Jessee's father. In the 1870 census, Archie is 40, Mary Ann is 37. Their oldest child, Sarah marries John Doty Addington and move to Kansas. Their first child is born 1871 in Downs, Kansas. Downs will be the birthplace of Harry Jessee. In 1873, after having 9 children, the youngest 1 year old, Mary Ann Purcell Jessee dies at the age of 40 and is buried in Scott County, Virginia. |
