"Rifle carried by John Thomas McDannald Jr, from Mt Vernon, Brown Co. Illinois
to Fort Walla Walla, Washington summer of 1865 while he captained wagon train
of relatives and friends. The rifle shows a lot of wear. Elmer Hodgen
was told that some grandchildren had played with it after John's death in 1890.
Dutch oven used by John's wife, Margaret Cull McDannald on this 1865 trip.
Hammer used by John's son, Nehemiah McDannald, while a teamster on freight wagons
between Walla Walla and Boise Idaho and the Oregon gold mines.
Pistol purchased by John's daughter, Malinda Jane McDannald, during the Nez Perce war in 1877 as she
was a school teacheeer and rode her horse to school; felt she needed protection.
These items were given to Vernon A. McDannald by Malinda's grandson,
Elmer Hodgen on 8-12-1996.
