Mrs. Shumaker is Poison Victim

After Long Illness, Amputation fails to check spread of gangrene

Mrs. Mary Shumaker, wife of E.F. Shumaker, died at Defiance hospital this morning at 1:30.

One leg was amputated Tuesday in an effort to save her life. Gangrene poisoning was the cause of her death. She was 52 years old.

For the past eight years Mrs. Shumaker had been ill and has been bedfast for four weeks, at her home on the Karr farm near the power dam and at Defiance hospital.

She was born near Belle Center, Ohio, and moved to this community with the family from near Antwerp two years ago.

Her husband, eight children, and two half sisters survive. The children are: Mrs. Ella Hankey, Hicksville; Mr. Laura Friend, Ft. Wayne; Alice, Defiance; Ralph, Alma, Kan; Clarence and Harvey, Flint, Mich; Glen, Charles, and Carl at home. One daughter died in infancy. Mrs. Shumaker's sisters, Mrs. John Metz, Hillsdale, Mich. And Mrs. Clara Eicher, Monclova, O., are her to attend the funeral.

Services will be held at the home at 2 p.m. Sunday, followed by a service in the Bethel M.E. church near Antwerp. The pastor of the Bethel church will be requested to conduct the services.
