Dorothy Lawson Bedwell, formerly a longtime Los Gatan, died May 10 in Walnut Creek, where she moved four years ago to be near her family. She was 101.

Bedwell was born Jan. 17, 1901, in Sunol and grew up in Oakland. She worked as a secretary for Western Power Utility Company before moving to Los Gatos in 1955. She then worked as a cafeteria manager at Hillbrook School from 1957 to 1965.

Primarily a homemaker for much of her adult life, Bedwell was a charter member of the South San Jose chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and a member of the Walnut Creek United Methodist Church. Among her favorite activities were spending time with her family and friends, cooking, knitting, singing, traveling, playing bingo, doing community service and watching ice skating and tennis matches on TV.

Bedwell was predeceased in 1969 by her husband of 46 years, Harold Bedwell. Survivors include daughter Nancy Carmichael of Auburn; daughter and son-in-law Judith and William Day of Walnut Creek; grandchildren Cathleen, Douglas, Philip and Patrick Carmichael and Erik, Travis and Adam Day; great-grandchildren Shana, Cailin, Breyanna, Travis, Johnathan and Quentin; and great-great-granddaughter Zoey. Among the members of her family, she was frequently called their "Other Mommie."

Memorial services have been held, with inurnment at Sunset View Cemetery in ElCerrito. Donations can be made to any children's hospital or veterans' hospital.
