In the 1760's his descendants were among the first pioneers to cross over from the Atlantic drainage to the Mississippi-Ohio basin along the headwaters of the New River in southwestern Virginia. In what later became Grayson County, among the valleys of the Iron Mountains, they were exposed to Indian attacks for the next 20 years. Many Bedwells still live in and around Grayson County. ... This branch of the Bedwells appeared on the farming frontier in southeastern Iowa in the late 1830's just as the government was opening up that area for settlement after the Black Hawk War."
