1910 Census, Des Moines, Augusta Township, Iowa, shows Samuel Bedwell,
25, a farm laborer, as head of household with: Martha, 20, his wife of three
years who has had 1 child, still living; and daughter Pearl M., 2. They are
renting a house.
World War I draft registration card shows Samuel Harrison Bedwell, born
4 Oct 1884, a resident of 416 -- 19th Ave, Rock Island, Rock Island County, Illinois.
He is a machine operator employed by "R.I. Arsenal". Nearest relative
is his wife, Martha Bedwell. He is of medium height and build with brown eyes
and dark hair.
1920 Census for Greene Township, Mercer County, Illinois, shows Samuel
Bedwell, 34, a laborer in a brick yard, as head of household containing: wife
Martha L., 30; daughter Pearl M., 11; daughter Hazel E., 9; son Ralph O., 6;
and daughter Jaunita, 5. They are renters.
1930 Census for Rock Island, Rock Island City, Illinois, shows Sam Bedwell,
a widower, renting for $25.00, working as a foreman in a coal mine; and daughter
Hazel, 20, single, a telephone operator, is also living in the household.
Canton Daily Ledger, October 28, 1938, reports Samuel Bedwell ended his
own life by inhaling carbon monoxide fumes. He was found dead at the Dallas
Barclay mine in the blackjack neighborhood, six miles northeast of Canton. He
had remarked to a brother-in-law, Luther Pollit, the previous day that "he
would be better off dead." Mr. Pollit had not considered the remark odd,
since Samuel had been in ill health for some time. The article continues with
obituary information listing Martha (Raker) Bedwell as widow, and four children
as survivors: Mrs Hazel Woods, Mrs. Pearl Wheeler, and Ralph and Juanita Bedwell
all of Rock Island. Samuel had "recently made his home in the Mapleton
and Peoria area." Samuel Harrison Bedwell and Martha Raker were married

Canton Daily Ledger, Monday, May 10, 1971, reports Martha Bedwell, 81,
of 2113 Sixth Avenue, Moline, died at 8:25 p.m. Sunday in Davenport Osteopathic
Hospital. A former Canton resident, she had lived in Moline for the past 35
years. Survivers are listed as: three daughters, Mrs. Pearl Van Wynesberghe of
Rock Island, Mrs. Samuel Grogg of Moline, and Mrs. Juanita Bilderback of Silvis,
IL. One son died earlier.
