59. James Bedwell5 was born about 1771 in Kent County, Delaware, or North Carolina.75 He died of palsey on 12 Dec 1856 in Grayson County, Virginia.75,76 He had his estate probated on 2 Jan 1859 in Grayson County, Virginia.49 He was a Minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church.77

• 1810 Census for Brooke, Virginia shows a James Bedwell as head of household containing: two males under 10, one male 10-16, one male 26-45, on female under 10, and one female of 26-45. No persons are engaged in agriculture and one person is engaged in manufacturing.

• 1810 Grayson County, Virginia tax list shows James Bedwell with one white titheable and three horses.

• 1813 Grayson County, Virginia tax list shows James Bedwell with one tithe, four horses, and 64 cents tax.

• 1817 Grayson County, Virginia tax list shows James Bedwell with two white males of 16+, two horses, and 36 cents tax.

• 1820 Census for Grayson County, Virginia shows James Bedwell as head of household containing: two males under 10; two males between 10-16; one male of 45+; three females under 10; three females between 10-16; one female between 16-26; and one female between 26-45. They do not own slaves.

• 1835 Grayson County, Virginia tax list shows James Bedwell with two white tithes, four horses, and 24 cents tax.

• 1850 Census for Grayson County, Virginia shows James Bedwell Sr., 76, a farmer born in N.C. who owns $42 real estate, as head of household with: Charlotte Bedwell, 3; and Caroline Bedwell, 9. James' son, Dow Bedwell, and his family live next door.
Charlotte is apparently the daughter of James Jr.; is Caroline his child also? Where is James Jr. at the time of this census?

• Grayson County Death Register lists Rev. James Bedwell's cause of death as "palsey". His occupation is shown as minister, his consort as Jane Bedwell (deceased). The death was reported by Dow Bedwell, his son. Dow Bedwell listed James' place of birth as North Carolina, not Delaware. His father is shown as Robert Bedwell.

• "1863 Grayson County, Virginia, Land Tax List" shows the Estate of James Bedwell as owning 42 acres in Rock Creek, valued at $84.
