56. Elisha Bedwell48,61 was born about 1754 in Kent County, Delaware.62,63 He was on the tax list in 1788 in Montgomery County, Virginia. He died on 19 Apr 1819 in White County, Tennessee.64,65

• Elisha was granted a license to perform marriages on 22 September 1795. This probably indicates that he was also ordained as a minister. Elisha became known as the "marrying preacher" when he married a young couple against the wishes of their parents. Apparently, feeling was so strong that Elisha felt it was in his best interests to join his married children in White County, Tennessee.

• Early Ministers of the Upper New River Valley shows Elisha Bedwell, Methodist, 1796.

• 1800 Grayson County, Virginia tax list shows Elisha Bedwell, minister, with no males over 21 and three horses.

• 1805 Grayson County, Virginia Personal Property Tax List shows Elisha Bedwell with male 16, four horses and 48 cents tax.

Elisha Bedwell and Mary Pool were married about 1775.63 Mary Pool66,67 (daughter of William Pool and Mary Ward) was born about 1758.5 She died after 1820 in White County, Tennessee. She was also known as Polly Pool.

• 1870 Census for White County, Tennessee, shows a Nancy Bedwell, 72, born in Virginia, living in this household: Elijah England, 57, a farmer with $2500 in land and $700 in personal assets; Jane, 53, born in North Carolina; Andrew J., 16; Trent C., 14; and Rebecca J., 12.
