• From Johnson County (Kentucky) History website (http://www.johnsoncountykyhistory.com/people/H.html):

"Hall, Dr. Lon C. - 12/2/12 - 3/11/89: Dr. Lon Hall was one of the most noted obstetricians and pediatricians in Kentucky. He spent his entire medical career practicing in Paintsville following training for his specialties at Harvard Medical School. The story is told that an eastern Kentucky mother, concerned about the health of her child, called a specialist at Baltimore's Women and Children's Hospital. She asked if she could bring her child to him for a medical examination. He reportedly replied, 'Certainly, madam. But why go to all that trouble and expense. You have one of the best pediatricians in the country right there in Kentucky.'"

• In A Bedwell Family (1982), p. 90, Larry King writes: "Lon Hall graduated from the U of Louisville (KY) Medical School and spent most of his professional career on the staff of Paintsville (KY) Hospital."

• From Paintsville Herald, March 1989:

"Dr. Lon C. Hall of Paintsville died March 11, 1989 at the age of 76 years. He was born December 2, 1912. He had served the people of Eastern Kentucky for almost 45 years. He was one of the finest pediatricians in Eastern Kentucky and had received his pediatric teaching at Boston children's Hospital. Prior to that he had attended the University of Louisville for both college and medical school. He was a graduate of Paintsville High School.

"Doctor 'Lon', as he was known, published a number of articles on certain diseases of children. He was one of the first to show the usefulness of sulfa drugs in the treatment of these diseases. He also initiated the use of special procedures. He initiated, designed and ran the children's and infant's ward in the old Paintsville Hospital.

"Doctor Noonan, chairman and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Kentucky, often said, 'When Dr. Lon referred a patient to the U.K. Medical Center you always knew the child was critically ill and that the referring diagnosis was correct.' Doctor Lon also delivered over 3,000 babies and took time to treat adults in need. He was a member of many medical and scientific societies.

"Doctor Lon had many hobbies, but teaching photography, Kentucky history, and directing the greenskeeping at the Paintsville golf course were his most important. He was greenskeeper at no charge to the golf club. It was during the time he was greenskeeper that the Paintsville Country Club became famous for its fine greens and fairways.

"Doctor Lon never let an opportunity go by to teach the nearest person about medicine or anything he had an in-depth knowledge about. He was known for his astute powers of observation although he was usually a rather shy and quiet person. He was always available for house calls and in his early years spent a number of nights in his model-T Ford an on horseback seeing deathly sick children up the creeks and hollows around Johnson County.

"Doctor Lon is survived by his wife, Dorothy Atkinson Hall; two sons, Drs. Bryan D. Hall of Lexington and Thomas M. Hall, of Roseburg, Oregon; four grandchildren Amanda, Patrick, Jonathan, and Angela Hall, all of Lexington; one stepdaughter, Barbara McGraw, of South Point, Ohio; one step granddaughter, Jenette Thompson, of South Point; three brothers, Dr. Paul B. Hall and Rev. C. C. Hall, both of Paintsville, and C. Mitchell Hall, of Lexington; and one sister, Lenore Gullett McClellan, of Paintsville.
