Arrest Five Corn Thieves

Terre Haute, Ind. Aug 9 (UP) -- State police Friday announced the arrest of five members of a corn stealing gang which they said had been looting farms in western Indiana since June. Held in Vigo county jail were Norman Auterson, 46, Terre Haute; Herschel Bedwell, 31, Linton; Lorney Bedwell, 25, Jasonville; Claude Knew, 24, St. Marys of the Woods; and Edward Gard, 23, West Terre Haute.

The men were charged with grand larceny for the theft of 2,000 bushels of corn and 120 rods of wire fencing. ... The gang operated four trucks, stealing the corn at night and selling it in Nashville, Tenn., police said. They face possible federal prosecution for transporting stolen property across state lines.
