385. Calvin Jones Hall161 was born in Aug 1839 in Grayson County, Virginia.521 He died on 13 Dec 1910.

• In his book, Johnson County, Kentucky : a history of the county, and genealogy of its people up to the year 1927 (1928), p. 258, C. Mitchel Hall says: "Calvin J. Hall lived most of his life in Independence, Virginia. He was strong in physique and was known in that section as "Big Cal". He was of a kind disposition and thereby gained the friendship of one and all. He visited his people in Johnson County, Kentucky, in 1908, which was the only time that any of this set of people ever visited the Johnson County set. Uncle Calvin spent some time with his folks in Nebraska. But when he became old and death was not far distant, he returned to his old old homestead at Independence, where he died. He and his wife are buried in the church cemetery near the home of their son Alex, not far from Independence, Virginia. Mr. Hall volunteered and served in the Civil War."

Granted pension on 6/2/1900 by the Grayson Co. Pension Board. Pension approved by the Grayson County Pension Board on 5/22/1908. Pension rerated on 3/21/1910. D. before 2/1911.

• 1870 Census for Elk Creek Township, Grayson County, Virginia, shows Calvin Hall, 28, a farm laborer with $180 assets, as head of household including: Jane, 27; Malinda, 8; Susan, 5; Luella, 2; and Emma, born May 1870.

• 1880 Census for Elk Creek District, Grayson County, Virginia, shows Calvin Hall, 43, a farmer, as head of household containing: wife Jane, 41; daughter Susan, 15; daughter Ellen, 11; daughter Charlotte, 9; son Jonathan, 8; daughter Nancy, 6; son Alex, 2; daughter Mattie, born Apr 1880; and mother Susan, 77.

• 1900 Census for Elk Creek District, Grayson County, Virginia, shows Calvin Hall (incorrectly shown as Cavin Hall in the genealogy.com index), born Aug 1839, a farmer who rents, as head of household consisting of: Mary, born Aug 1843, his wife of 42 years who has had 16 children with 11 still living; daughter Nannie Vaughn, born Mar 1878, a widow who has had no children; son Walter Hall, born Jan 1882; daughter Daisy, born Sep 1883; son Barton, born Aug 1885; and son Melvin, born Oct 1888.
