• In his book, Johnson County, Kentucky : a history of the county, and genealogy of its people up to the year 1927 (1928), p. 259, C. Mitchel Hall says: "In Grayson County, Virginia, farming on a small scale and grazing are about the only means of occupation, as there has never been a railroad near Independence, Virginia. During the boyhood days of Christopher Hall the opportunities were few in that region and he like many another at that time left Virginia, and came to Kentucky when a young man. He came to Johnson County in 1869 and began work for William Preston who was a large land-owner on Big Sandy River. It was here that he met and married his wife. They went to housekeeping on Bobb's Branch. This homestead was soon broken up, as Mr. Hall died in less than two years' time, from the effects of what is now known as appendicitis. He is buried in the Preston Cemetery near the present post office of Thelma, Kentucky. After his death Ellen Hall married S.J. Johnson."
