no real estate; Hester N., 25; Amanda C., 6; Martha E., 4; Samuel S., 3; Mary
C., 1; William A., 15; Eliza J., 13; John E., 11; and Thomas J., 9. The children
are listed in this unusual, out of sequence, order; my guess is that the four
oldest are not children of Hester, and must be Manuel's from a previous marriage.
• 1860 Census for District 6, Hardin County, Tennessee shows Manuel McClain,
47, a farmer with $3000 in real estate and $6170 in assets, as head of household
with: Hester N., 34; James, 22; Thomas, 19; Amanda, 15; Martha E., 14; Samuel
S., 13; Mary, 11; Rufus, 9; Lewis, 7; Jennette, 5; John W., 3; and Nancy, 1.
Judging from the large value of personal assets, my guess is that they were
slave owners.
– 1870 Census for Hardin County, Tennessee, shows the family of: Manuel
McClain, 57, a farmer with $1500 in real estate and $1200 in assets; Hester,
45; Rufus K., 19; Louis, 16; Jinetta, 14; John, 12; Nancy, 10; Chesley, 8; Robert,
5; and Jimima Gray, 19, a black woman. Hester N. Gammill and Manuel McClain
were married about 1843 in Hardin County, Tennessee. Manuel
McClain458 was born
about 1814 in Tennessee.461
