243. Eleroy Bedwell321 was born in 1815 in Virginia.322 He died in Jan 1872 in Stoddard
County, Missouri. He was a farmer and a miller.
• Ericson says, p. 107: "Eleroy Bedwell and his wife Martha were living
in or near Bedford, Indiana in 1837. The 1850 Census revealed the family living
in Clark County, Illinois. The family lived in Kankakeee, Illinois and then
moved to Perry County, Missouri. Here Eleroy ran a mill until the war started.
Some years later the family moved near Bloomfield, Missouri - in Stoddard County
- where Eleroy and Martha both died. They are buried in a cemetary three miles
west of Bloomfield."
• 1850 Census for Richland, Clark County, Illinois, taken Sep 1850, shows
Eleroy Bedwell, 33, a farmer born in Virginia who owns $500 of real estate, as
head of household: Patcy, 31, born in Indiana; Samuel, 13, born in Indiana; William,
10, born in Indiana; Andrew, 7, born in Illinois; James, 3, born in Illinois;
and Lydia, 12, born in Pennsylvania. (Lydia is listed out of birth order and
her birthplace doesn't seem to make sense relative to the other children; is
she adopted? Or did they just list all the boys first, then the girl, and had
the family made a failed attempt to settle in Pennsylvania during that year?)
• 1860 Census for Cinque Hommes, Perry County, Missouri, shows E. Bedwell,
age 44, a miller with $3000 real estate and $1000 assets, as head of household
with: Martha G., 41; Samuel, 22; William H., 18; A.G., 17; and James F., 13.
All four boys had attended school within the past year.
• Listed as a private in the Missouri 64th Regiment of the Enrolled Missouri
Militia (Union), enrolled 10 Aug 1862 in Perry County, Missouri. (Found on State

• 1870 Census for Cinque Hommes, Perry County, Missouri, shows Elroy E.
Bedwell, 53, a farmer born in Virginia who owns $2000 of real estate and $1000
in personal assets, as head of household consisting of himself and wife Martha,
51, born in Indiana. Son Andrew and his family live next door. Eleroy Bedwell
and Martha (Patsy) Hoskins were married on 19 Mar 1836 in Lawrence County, Indiana.
Martha (Patsy) Hoskins321 (daughter of Samuel Griffin Hoskins and Frances ?)
was born about 1819 in Indiana. She died in Stoddard County, Missouri.
