• 1910 Census for Crockett County, Tennessee, shows Thomas D. Hatfield,
53, a
farmer, as head of household consisting of: Mary M., 45, his wife of 24 years;
son Andrew, 21; son Otis, 21 (who should actually be 19); daughter Effie, 11;
daughter-in-law Bobbie Hatfield, 22, a widow; daughter-in-law Willma F. Hatfield,
17, a widow; and granddaughter Viola Conder, 3.
Something is weird here! The 1900 census only showed three sons, two of whom
are shown in the 1910 census (and they were two years apart in age in 1900, now
in 1910 they are the same age), so how can there be two widowed daughters-in-law?
Also, eldest daughter Janie Ethel must have died before 1910. What happened
to this family???
• The 1920 Census for Dyer County, Tennessee, shows that the 1910 situation
above might have contained a mistake. In 1920, Otis Hatfield, 27, a farmer,
is shown as married to Wilma, 26. They have two daughters: Cordia, 7, and Jennie,
2 and 6/12. Was he actually married to Wilma in 1910? He was shown as single,
she as a widowed daughter-in-law of Thomas D. Hatfield. Or, did Otis and Wilma
marry after 1910?
Thomas D. Hatfield is on the same page of the 1920 Census as his son Otis. He
is now 58, and still a farmer. His wife is now called Melissa, 55. Also in
the household are daughter Effie, 21, and granddaughter Viola Conder, 13.
Adding to the mystery, the 1920 Census for Dyer County, Tennessee, shows an Andrew
Hatfield, 32, a farmer, married to Bobbie, 31. They have two sons, James D.,
age 7, and Thomas, age 2+.
Reading over all of the above, it seems likely that Bobbie and Wilma were actually
married to Andrew and Otis in 1910, although that is not definite.
• 1930 Census for Dyer County, Tennessee, shows T.D. Hatfield, 69, whose
occupation is common labor, living with wife Mary M., 65. They pay $3/mo rent.
The 1930 Census for Crockett County, Tennessee, shows Otis Hatfield, 39, a farm
laborer, as head of household consisting of: wife Wilma, 38; Cordie, 18, female;
Jennie Mae, 13; Dorothy, 9; J.T. (or J.F.), 8, male; Vera, 7; and John E., 2
and 3/12 (census was taken on 4/2/30). Otis and Wilma were married when he was
18 and she was 17. They pay $3/mo rent. Wilma is shown as unable to read or
write.
The 1930 Census for Dyer County, Tennessee, shows Bobbie Hatfield, 42, a widow,
as head of household. Also residing in the household are son Tom, 12, and Bobbie's
sister, Calli Hammond, 60, single. Bobbie and Tom can read and write, but Calli
is listed as illiterate. Son James does not appear in any 1930 Census.
Mary Melissa Bedwell and Thomas D. Hatfield were married on 9 Oct 1884.796 Thomas
D. Hatfield797 was born
in Jan 1861 in Tennessee.308
