"The story takes place one hot very hot summer day. Doyle as he was called
by his family, came back to the house after working in the fields with his father
and several other men. He grabbed his favorite horse and his border collie dog
Ring and went down to the swimming hole out back of the house several acres away.
This being Tennessee and the summer everyone was looking for coolness anywhere
they could find it. Doyle jumped in the cool water and Ring jumped in too. A
snake, a cottonmouth, was swimming in the pool of water and Ring grabbed the
snake before it could attack Doyle, there by saving his life and making himself
a very valuable companion. Dad, because Doyle was my father never told that story
about ole Ring without swallowing several times and wiping away a few tears.
Ring lived to be about16 years old and hated snakes until his dying day. Dad
sang the song about Ole Shep and we always knew he was thinking about Ring ........."
and "Dad didn't talk much about his participation in WWII. It had to be
the right time and I guess a persistent daughter. We travelled to Europe together
with his group of Vets from the 103rd Division., also known as Patton's Army.
He was in the 410th Inf. and HDQ Co. His reunion with those fellows is a cherished
memory of mine. It was 46 years after walking some of the places they fought
so hard and lost so many men, he shared memories. Some are hair-raising, some
incredible. He spoke in a hesitant manner as if talking about those experiences
would bring back the nightmare he still had. One such experience took place during
the Battle of the Bulge. He had climbed a telephone pole to rig a line. The wind
was blowing extremely hard and his jacket was billowing . A German plane came
along and began shooting at him , he released the rigging and came down the pole
as fast as he could. On the ground he found 5 bullet holes in the jacket but
none touched him!"
and "Dad was a communication operator during WWII . He was told by General
McCaulife to 'Get that line across the River'. Dad said, "Yes sir, I will
but I'm shorthanded personnel at this time, sir. The General stated, 'I'll go
with you'. So, they were rowed across and Dad and the General laid lines for
communication during the night, before the battle the next day. Dad said he wasn't
bad, for a General."
