From Coffin page:
Grandmother Polly Bedwell always had a particular fancy for her eldest grandchild, Martin Waters, and seems to have been more or less indifferent to the other nine. Evidence of this fact is her bequeathing the farm to him instead of to her daughter, her natural heir. It is probable that he lived with her after her husband's death, for after his marriage, he took his wife Mary to live there until shetired of it. They subsequently cleaned up another log cabin on the farm (which had housed sheep and chickens) and they lived there. In1880 Martin Waters built the "new" frame house on the Earl Morgan farm. It was only a shell, lacking a basement, foundation, lath, plaster, or porches -- about everything except basic walls, roof and floor!

Martin inherited the poor business judgment of his father, George Washington Waters. He mortgaged the farm in order to go into the business of selling stump pullers. He mortgaged his cattle and saw them driven away for the debt. He worked extremely hard, digging tile ditches, working out by the day, cutting timber, -- anything he couldfind to do for wages. But eventually he lost his farm by foreclosure.
