• 1860 Census for Clarke County, Alabama, taken 1 June 1860, shows Allen Bedwell, 42, born in Washington County, Alabama, a farmer who owns no real estate but has $1000 assets, as head of household with: wife Eliza, 43, born in Tennessee; daughter Mahala A., 9, born in Mississippi; son Albert, 5; daughter Lucy, 2; and daughter Sarah M., 2/12. The three youngest were born in Clarke County, Alabama.

1860 Slave Schedule for Clarke County, Alabama, shows Allen Bedwell as the owner of eight slaves, all black: two adult females, two female children, and four male children. There is one slave house. Next on the page is John Cunningham, Allen Bedwell's brother-in-law; he has 40 slaves (4 of whom are listed as "fugitives from the state") and 11 slave houses.

William and John were born in Mississippi, the rest in Alabama.

Allen Bedwell and Elizabeth Cunningham were married on 10 Oct 1837 in Butler, Choctaw County, Alabama. Elizabeth Cunningham228 (daughter of ) was born about 1823 in Tennessee. She appeared in the census in 1840 in Living in Clark County, Mississippi. She appeared in the census in 1850 in Living in Clark County, Mississippi. She was unable to read or write in 1860. She died after Jun 1880.

According to the 1860 census for Clarke Count, Alabama, living two residences away is a reasonably wealthy planter, John Cunningham, also born in Tennessee.
