in the military in the Civil War in CSA, Company F, 1st Battalion, State Troops,
Mississippi.
James became a business partner of his father as soon as he was old enough
to help. Captain James Bedwell ran the steamboat and carried freight while son,
James, managed the mercantile business and family farm interests. In order to
distinguish between the two James, son James put the initial W. in his signature.
The W. did not stand for a name. Eventually, he identified himself as just J.
W. Bedwell.

Co., Ala. - 24 Aug 1832; for $4000.00 - two sections (1280 acres) obtained from

and John COFFEE); Sections 17 and 20; East half of SE qtr, Sect. 18; East half
of NE qtr and SE qtr, Sect. 19, T1, R18E; witnesses: J. S. LYON, S. S. GAINS;
Wm. HOWZE, agent, certified on 13 Oct 1833 that Joel H. NAIL applied and located
the above described land to be reserved from sale having claimed the provisions
of the supplement of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek; recorded 8 Nov 1834.

Bedwell, 37, a farmer who owns $2500 in real estate, as head of household: Mary,
40; Olivia, 12; Donald, 9; Arabella, 8; Alexander, 7; Johnathan, 4; Mary, 7/12
(born about Mar 1850); and Thomas Roberts, a carpenter born in Georgia. James
and Mary Bedwell were born in Alabama, while the kids were born in Mississippi.
1850 Slave Schedule for Clarke County, Mississippi, shows James Bedwell as the
owner of 12 slaves: 4 male adults, 1 female adult, 1 male child, and 6 female
children.
1860 Census for Raymond, Hinds County, Mississippi, shows J.W. Bedwell,
43, a farmer, as head of household consisting of: Winnie, 24, born in Ireland;
J.D., 19, male; A.D., 16, male; J.G., 13, male; and M.M., 10, female.
1860 Slave Schedule for Hinds County, Mississippi, shows J.W. Bedwell as the
owner of 13 slaves, all black: 3 adult males, 4 adult females, 1 male child,
and 5 female children. None are "fugitives from state". There are
three slave houses.
I found no listing in the 1870 census for this family.
1880 Census for Hinds County, Mississippi, shows J.W. Bedwell, 65, a farmer
born in Alabama whose father and mother were born in Maryland and Georgia, as
head of household consisting of: wife Winnie, 40, born in Ireland; son Joseph,
18; daughter Ida, 13; daughter Anna, 11; daughter Loula, 8; and Millin Roberson,
20, mullato, a servant. J.W. is listed "Sick" in the health/disability
column. James W. (J.W.) Bedwell and Mary Nicholson were married.

Mary is possibly the daughter of John Nicholson Sr. who is found along with John
Nicholson Jr. in the 1810 Madison County, Alabama Tax List dated 17 July 1810.
