King, p. 36, quotes grandson W. Carroll Bumpers as saying: "Grandfather operated a general store, the only store in Anice, Franklin Co., AR. They reared their children there, and they lived there until Grandfather retired and they moved to Charleston, approximately ten miles away. I remember Grandfather quite well. He wasa born in 1844 in Hardin County and married Grandmother there. They moved to Franklin County around 1879 and he lived until 1937. When I was a little boy, he told me he had loved near the Shiloh Church and that he walked through the battlefield two days after the Battle of Shiloh and had to hold a handkerchief to his nose because of the stench of death. He said there was a great deal of Southern sentiment in Hardin County but that the Union Forces gained dominance early and generally held it throughout the Civil War."
