"Obituary: GAMMILL The body of John S. Gammill died Tuesday, April 5, 1994,
but his spirit is with the Lord he loved for eternity, and the memory of John
will be with all those who loved him. John was born in Devol, Ok. August 3, 1923
to Cora and Boone Gammill. He was very proud of being raised in the rural communities
of Randlett and Devol, Ok. He talked fondly of the one room school he attended
at Cedric, Ok. John's strong rural roots and the values he learned as a very
young child guided his life for over 70 years. There were two principals that
governed his life: First, his favorite scripture, Micah 6:8 "And what the
Lord requires of you: Only to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly
with your God." Second: his definition of character, "to go on and
do what you know you should do even after the mood and motivation have left you."
John practiced these two principals daily. After being honorably discharged from
the US Navy in 1946, John moved and made his home in Oklahoma City. He went to
work as a tool and die maker only to change careers to the field of insurance
sales shortly thereafter. Not being a person to do anything half-heartedly, he
went from sales to owning his own agency and then decided to build his own company.
In September 1956, he founded Reserve National Insurance Company. The two basic
principals John subscribed to in life allowed him to build a company of people
dedicated to upholding the standards and traditions he had established in his
own life. John loved his native state of Oklahoma and actively promoted it throughout
the years. He had been a member of Oklahoma City Beautiful, the Board of Governors
of the Kirkpatrick Center, the Professional Rodeo Cowboy's Association, the Men's
Dinner Club, the Economic Club, the Oklahoma City and Oklahoma State Chambers
of Commerce, member of the OU Foundation Board, and was vice chairman of the
Polycystic Kidney Research Foundation. He was also a member of Putnam City Baptist
Church, and numerous insurance organizations. John is survived by his wife, Dolores;
two sons, Lee S. Gammill and Randy G. Gammill; and six grandchildren, Tamara,
Bonnie, Heather, Shaun, Brian and Kelley. He is also survived by his sister,
Ima Jean Matthews; two nephews; and a host of cousins and friends. The family
requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to The John S. Gammill Chair
in Polycystic Kidney Research, c/o University of Oklahoma Foundation, 100 Timberdell
Rd., Norman, Ok. 73019, or The Polycystic Kidney Research Foundation, 922 Walnut
St., Kansas City, Mo. 64106 or The Putnam City Baptist Church, 5604 N.W. 41st,
OKC, Ok. 73122. Services will be held Friday, April 8, 1994 at 10:00 a.m. at
Putnam City Baptist Church with interment at Memorial Park Cemetery." John Stewart Gammill and Marjorie Crenshaw had the following
