King says, p. 73-74: "Both Mr. and Mrs. Bumpers were extremely active in their First Methodist Church; he was a trustee, stewart, church school superintendent and adult Sunday school class teacher and she was an adult Sunday school class teacher. Mr. Bumpers' Sunday school class was taken over by son Dale and continues to be known as The Bumpers Sunday School Claass. William Bumpers was a farmer and school teacher (eight grades in a one room schoolhouse) for six or seven years. They then moved sixteen miles from the community of Cecil, AR to Charleston, AR where he managed a hardware and furniture store as well as a funeral home -- not an unusual combination in that area at that time. He was active in civic affairs; served on both the Charleston School Board and the Franklin County Board of Education, member of the State Legislature one term and was President of the Arkansas Hardware Merchants Association."
