33. Elijah Bedwell45 was born between 1745 and 1752
in Kent County, Delaware. He appeared in the census in 1790 in Rowan
County, North Carolina. He died in Surry County, North Carolina.54
Elijah is listed in the 1790 Census of Rowan County, North Carolina as living
on Cedar Creek across the Yadkin River from Tanglewood in what is now Davie County.
Elijah disappeared from North Carolina records in 1807 and his date and place
of death is unknown.
Elijah Bedwell is listed among the Tories in Captain John Johnson's District
in August 1778. However, MORAVIANS OF NORTH CAROLINA Vol. 3 indicates that he
furnished supplies to the Patriots. The question is was Elijah a Tory or a Patriot?
1790 Census for Rowan County, North Carolina, shows Elijah Bedwell as
head of household consisting of one male of age 16+, two males under 16, and
five females.

August 25,1772 Elijah loses a Plea of Trespass against him and is ordered to
give up his 1/9th share of Wedmore he is to inherit. (Kent Co. Deed Book V, page
11)
1778 Elijah and brother Caleb are listed as Tories in Capt. John Johnston's District
of Rowan County. Moravian records state that Elijah furnished supplies indicating
that he was not a Tory.
1784 Elijah appears on a Rowan County Tax List as owning 200 acres of land.
November 4,1784 the state of North Carolina sells Elijah Bedwell 600 acres of
land in Rowan County.
May 2,1786 Elijah sells about 500 acres of his land to Owen Seeny, his brother-in-law.
1789 Rowan County tax list says that in his household are 2 males and 4 females.

Nov. 9, 1775: Dennis Burgin has leave to take possession of a sufficient quantity
of the goods of Thomas BEDWELL (who has absented himself from this county) as
security for a debt under twenty pounds.
Feb. 8, 1783: Persons cited to appear November term last to show cause under
the Act of Assembly why their Estates should not be confiscated were at this
court called

BEDWELL and Robert BEDWELL. (Note: Act of Assembly may pertain to confiscation
of estates of Tories or suspected Tories.)

Bk 12 p. 554, May 23, 1788: Robert Bedwell (no wife signs) lets Phillip Haynes,
both of Rowan Co., have 200 acres on Muddy Creek; begins on line of Henry Miller
and going south past the Moravian line. Proven Feb. 1792.
Bk 16 p. 37, July 5, 1793: Elijah Bedwell (no wife signs) lets William Bedwell,
both of Rowan Co., have 250 acres on Chinquapin Creek. James Bedwell, witness.
Proven Feb. 1798.
Bk 17 p. 24, July 13, 1799: William Bedwell lets Thomas Bedwell have 125 acres,
which is part of the 250 acres that Elijah Bedwell conveyed to William Bedwell
on July 5, 1793 (sic) and is part of the 600 acre grant to Elijah Bedwell on
November 4, 1784 for one hundred pounds.
Bk 19 p.388, Jan. 31, 1803: Thomas Bedwell, Stokes County. N. C., (Elizabeth
Bedwell makes her mark) lets George Beaty of Rowan County have 37 acres on Chinquapin
Creek.
Rowan County Deed Book 19, p. 362. 4 March 1803. William Bedwell to William Beatty
for 100£,125 A. on Chinkerpin (sic) adj Henry Spears, Thomas Bedwell, Owen
Seaner (sic),and Margaret Hendricks. Caty Bedwell also signed the deed. Wit.:

Bk 19 p. 860, March 10, 1804: Thomas Bedwell, Stokes Co., N. C., lets William
Beaty have 93 ½ acres in Rowan County on Chinquapin Creek.
Bk 21 p. 121, May 10, 1807: James Bedwell, Rowan County, N. C., lets Edward
Sweat of Surry Co., N. C., have 200 acres on Dutchman's Creek for two hundred
dollars. This land conveyed to Bedwell on Sept. 12, 1795.
Bk 21 p. 121, May 10, 1807: James Bedwell, Rowan County, N. C., lets Abraham
Blume of Stokes Co., N. C., have 88 acres in Rowan County for $ 30. This is
part of 125 acres of which 37 acres was sold to George Beaty and not included
in this. It is part of a tract, which William Bedwell let Thomas Bedwell have
on July 13, 1799, but should Thomas Bedwell pay the $ 30 by August 1, then it
will be void.
1793 Wythe County, Virginia Personal Property Tax List (transcription
from New River Notes website, http://www.ls.net/~newriver/va/wyth1793.htm#2)
shows:
Elijah Bedwell, taxed for one tithe and four horses He is on the list two lines
before the listing for a Robert Bedwell, and three lines after listings for Reuben
Bedwell and another Robert Bedwell.
Listed in section two, which became Grayson County sometime in 1793.
Elijah Bedwell and Mary Seaney were married on 1 Jan 1771 in Kent County,
Delaware.38 Mary
Seaney5,55 (daughter of Owen Seaney and Martha Parnell) was born
about 1750 in Kent County, Delaware.54
She died in Surry County, North Carolina.54
The will of Owen Seenea made 16 October 1771 names daughter Mary, wife
of Elijah Bedwell. (Kent County, Delaware Wills Liber N Folio 84-85). Elijah
