1900 Census for Sullivan County, Tennessee, shows Virgil Shipley, born Oct 1870, a farm laborer, as head of household consisting of: Lillian, his wife of six years, born Aug 1865, who has had three children with two still living; daughter Cora E., born Sept 1880; son Joseph E., born Feb 1883; and mother-in-law Elizabeth Bedwell, a widow born Mar 1830 in North Carolina. They live next to A.C. Bedwell, who is Lillian's brother and Elizabeth's son. (I'm not sure what to make of this; the kids can't be Virgil's, though they are listed as surname Shipley; they are probably from a previous marriage of Lillian's. It might be notable that Elizabeth was initially listed as Shipley, then that was scratched out and Bedwell written in; so, the census taker might have assumed the kids were Shipleys when they might in fact have had a different surname. Also, Elizabeth is listing her birthdate as ten years later than previous census records had shown; is she fibbing about her age because her husband is so much younger?).
