laborer; Martha, 12; Sarah E., 10; James, 3; and Mary Collius, 21. Everyone
else was born in Indiana.
1860 Census for Haddon Township, Sullivan County, Indiana, taken 20 June
1860, shows Theophilus Paget, 55, a farmer born in Kentucky who owns real estate
valued at $2500 and assets of $600, as head of household with: Parmelia, 41;
Martha, 19; Sarah J., 16; James, 13; Cassius, 3/12; William Purcell, 14, an orphan;
and Elizabeth Smith, 89, born in Pennsylvania. Everyone else was born in Indiana.
1870 Census for Haddon Township, Sullivan County, Indiana shows Theophilus
Padget, 64, a farmer born in Kentucky who owns real estate valued at $2320 and
assets of $1500, as head of household including: Permelia, 57; Cashus G., 10;
and Thomas Hedley, 21, a farmhand.
1880 Census for Haddon Township, Sullivan County, Indiana shows Theo Padgette,
74, a retired farmer, as head of household with: son Casius, 20, a farmer; wife,
W.A., 17; and sister Em. McCort, 18, a servant. Is W.A. the wife of Casius,
and Em. the sister of W.A.? (The initials W.A. don't match the name, Mattie
T. Correll, shown in the Indiana Marriages database as having married Cassius
Padgett in 1879.) Permelia (Milly) Bedwell and Theophilus Padgett were married
about 1832 in Sullivan County, Indiana. Theophilus
Padgett was born between 1805 and 1810 in Kentucky.143,144

A biographical sketch of James Padgett, in the History of Sullivan County, Indiana
by Wolfe, Vol. I & II, 1909, Pg. 123, reads in part:
James H. Padgett, born 3 Jan 1848, in this township, a son of the late Theophilus
Padgett. His grandfather Padgett was one of the earliest settlers of Haddon township,
coming here in the very early period of its settlement, at the time of his arrival
there being but two houses between Carlisle and Pleasantville. ... Born in
Kentucky, Theoplhilus Padgett was but six years old when he came with his parents
to Sullivan county. Brought up on a farm, he continued in the occupation to which
he was reared, and on reaching man's estate entered government land in Haddon
Township, and at once began the pioneer work of clearing and improving a homestead.
... goes on to say that Theophilus was twice married, his first wife, whose maiden
name was Susie Hinkle, died in early womanhood, leaving two children, namely:
William, of Pleasantville, and Sareldia, deceased. He married for his second
wife Permelia Bodwell, who was born in Jefferson township, Indiana.
