• Jack Bedwell's nephew, Robert Henry Bedwell, says that Jack Bedwell was always an unusually large man. Robert says that his uncle was an All-City (Los Angeles) football player in high school. He was also musically talented, having mastered many instruments; Robert reports that Jack was a bandleader in Los Angeles during the 1930s and that his band once finished second in a city competition behind Guy Lombardo. Eventually, financial pressures caused him to concentrate on his day job, which was a crane operator. Jack never married or had children, but Robert says that Jack did have a special lady friend, whom he lived with until his death.

Family legend has it that Jack once demonstrated his unusual strength while saving a man's life. According to the story, a man was underneath an automobile when the jacks failed, causing the car to fall on him and pin him. Supposedly, Jack lifted the car up singlehandedly, allowing others to pull the man to safety.
