1736. Jefferson Whitfield (Whitt) Harrell was born on 8 Nov 1876 in Bremond, Robertson County, Texas. Between 1908 and 1936 he was a Mathematics Professor at Baylor University. He died of tuberculosis on 14 Dec 1938.

Jefferson Whitefield Harrell, son of John Bedwell and Annie (Davis) Harrell, was born in Bremond, Texas, on 8 November 1876. He was reared in Waco, where he attended Baylor Academy, Toby's School of Business (1897-1900), and Baylor University, receiving his A.B. degree in 1901 and his A.M. in 1907. He became a member of Baylor's mathematics faculty in 1908 and was elected chairman of the department in 1930, retiring about 1936. He took leaves of absences to attend Columbia University (1916), the University of Chicago (1920-1922), and Brown University, where he was awarded a second A.M. degree in 1923. On 5 June 1913 he married Margaret Terry; they became the parents of two children. Harrell was a member of the American Mathematical Society, American Association of Teachers of Mathematics, and the American Association of University Professors. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Waco where he was elected a deacon in 1907, and served as superintendent of the Intermediate Sunday School department. Harrell died of tuberculosis on 14 December 1938 in a Kerrville sanitarium.

The Jefferson Whitefield Harrell Papers consist primarily of class notes and assignments in various fields of mathematics--including solid geometry, elliptic integrals, applied calculus, differential equations, and trigonometry--which Harrell took during his student years at Baylor, Columbia, Chicago, and Brown Universities.
