391. Talitha Bedwell164 was born on 15 Nov 1824 in Grayson
County, Virginia.523 She
was also known as Tabitha or Tolitha Bedwell.
Grayson County Death Register for February, 1855, shows Tabitha Bedwell as the
only parent of Benjamin Bedwell, deceased just short of his second birthday,
as reported by John Bedwell, Benjamin's grandfather.
1870 Census for Elk Creek, Grayson County, Virginia, shows Talitha Bedwell, 44,
living in the household of her son, Felix Bedwell, 25, and his wife Martha, 24.
Pinckney Bedwell, 8, is also living in the household and appears to be the son
of Talitha. Her son, John K. Bedwell, 14, is living next door with John R. and
Missouri Pool. Two other Pool families are on the same census page: Wiley F.,
27, and wife Nancy (who is either Talitha's sister or daughter), 26; and Jonathan
(father of Wiley F.), 74, and wife (?) Annie, 45. On the page right before that,
there is an Amanda Bedwell, 20, a seamstress, living in the household of Charles
and Rhoda Sexton, a septugenarian couple, and their two daughters; since we know
that Talitha bound out at least one of her other children (Felix), could this
be another child of Talitha? On the same page as Talitha, there is also a Martha,
21, married to James Vaughan; could this be Talitha's daughter Martha?
1880 Census shows Talitha living in Elk Creek, Grayson County, Virginia, as head
of household (occupation: "keeping house"). The only other resident
of the household is her son, Pinkney. Charlotte Bedwell and family are listed
on the same page, so apparently lived nearby.
1880 Census shows Talitha Bedwell as single head of household with one son.
Census form has three categories for marriage status: single, married, widowed/divorced.
That she was listed as single might mean never married, indicating her children
were born out of wedlock.
