Okay my friends and fellow relatives,
This one is going to be wordy. I have several relayed e-mail that I need help
with.
I have a problem that I need some help in deciphering. My husband ggrandfather
was David Bedwell. I know from family history that he lived to be 105 years old.
and that his wifes name at the time was Callie/ Caroline?
We after months of searching I find a family member that decsribes her "Uncle
Dave", he fits into the family I thought I had found.
Joann sent me this:
I called and talked to Aunt Anna's sons who were very young when they went down
south to take my Grandmother to see her Uncle Dave.
Bobby said that Uncle Dave lived with his daughter Jennie who married a Rutherford.
Uncle Dave outlived Jennie who was in her 60's or 70's at the time of this visit.Bobby
and Billy, my cousins, just had the briefest of memories. They think Uncle Dave
was married about 3 times, but they aren't sure. He died in Marion , Virginia.
He was in something like a nursing home, and tried to commit suicide by using
a straight razor when he was 100 or a shade past. He was not a large man according
to Bobby, but maybe he had shrunk a little like some older people do.
He lived with his daughter Jennie near Rt. 16, not too far from Grassy Creek,
N.C. and Mouth of Wilson. Somewhere in that area.
Bobby seemed to think that Jennie and a couple other Bedwells were buried in
the New River Cemetery.
I think Cynthia E.(my great grandmother) and Uncle Dave were full siblings.
My grandmother, Bertie Lou Bedwell was born in Weaversford, North Carolina.
I'm not sure about Cynthia. Grassy Creek. Weaversford, etc. are on the border
of Va. and N.C. so I think people moved back and forth across the divide.
Alfred Bedwell, Dave and Cynthia's father divorced his first two wives.
Cynthia and Dave came from the first wife-Eliza Ann Evans.
I am sorry that I don't have more information. I guess I am lucky to have what
I have.
But here's a problem, a new family member say his 'David" was someone elses
child. Here are my two possibilities.
1 David BEDWELL

The second is that William is the son of John and martha Poole. Does anyone
out there researching these two men?
Here is some of the discussion we have had. If it sound familar let me know.
Brian sends me this:
One thing about the Alfred and Eliza Ann Bedwell discussion you may finding interesting.
I doubt Eliza Ann was really William David Bedwell's mother, and I'll tell you
why. I subscribed to the Federal Census via www.ancestry.com and pulled a copy
of the 1880 census, wherein Eliza Bedwell was listed; her age was recorded as
40! Remember, W. David Bedwell was born in 1850. That would mean if Eliza Ann
Evans were his mother, she would have been age 10 when he was born! Highly unlikely
I would say! Interestingly, though, Cynthia Bedwell, her daughter, was listed
as age 18, so her lineage to Eliza Ann makes sense. I think maybe your husbands'
relatives may have had the order of Alfred Bedwell's wives a bit reversed.
Possibly W. David Bedwell's mother was wife #1 and has remained unidentified,
with Eliza Ann Evans being wife # 2, the mother of Cynthia and Joshua, as listed
in the 1880 Census.
The research Paul has done would indicate that William David was born in 1859,
which would mean he was really on 97 years old when he died rather than 106!
However, ask Paul to check the 1870 census for Grayson County, VA., looking for
John and Patsy Bedwell. They also had a son, William, age 11, and a daughter
Eliza. John Bedwell was listed as age 50 and Patsy (nee Poole) Bedwell was age
48, according to that census. It is possible that John and Patsy rather than
Alfred and Eliza were William D. Bedwell's parents? That would at least get the
John Bedwell reference correct on W. David's death certificate!!! It also could
allow for an 1850 birthdate, with John being born about 1820 and Patsy being
born about 1822. There is one problem:
According to a note I found elsewhere John Bedwell and Martha Pool, the parents
of the other John referenced above, were married December 20, 1820. That would
mean at the earliest, the other John Bedwell would have been born in September
1821, making him 49 in the 1870 census rather than 50.
One thing about W. David Bedwell's 2nd wife--Callie Neikirk--is that she is listed
in the 1910 Ashe County, NC., census as "Caroline" and is reported
as aged 70 then. The 1900 Census for Ashe County, NC., reported Callie as being
born in March of 1845, and her relationship to W. David was wife of 23 years.
The 1910 census indicated that Caroline Bedwell was David Bedwell's wife of 38
yrs. Are Caroline Bedwell and Callie Neikirk Bedwell one and the same? Given
that both Censuses show Callie or Caroline as having 5 children--2 from her marriage
#1 to Frank Cook; 3 from her marriage to W. David Bedwell, including my great
grandmother, Liza Ann; her sister, Mary Virginia ("Jennie"); and brother
Alfred Wiley--I am inclined to believe they are one and the same, despite the
age discrepancy. Well, at least Callie or Caroline's appearance on the 1910 Census
indicates she lived that long. I had thought she died in 1910. Maybe she died
later that year or early in 1911. The 1910 Census was enumerated in June.
Glad to have a cousin-in-law who is so interested in geneaology. As you can probably
testify, geneaological research is like a fever!!! Hopefully we will get to the
bottom of this mystery one day! But be assured, I know for a fact that William
David Bedwell was born 10/12/1850 and died 10/16/1956 at age 106. By the way,
the 1910 Census finally reflected W. David Bedwell's correct age. In June of
1910, David would have been 59. The Census correctly noted that fact!!!!!!!!!
