ROPE LEADS TO DETECTION
Hartford City, Ind., Jan. 31 -- A peculiarly knotted balloon rope is the clew
that led to the direction of suspicion against Jimmy Bedwell, a youthful and
dare-devil aeronaut, who was arrested today at Indianapolis and returned here
tonight and lodged in jail to await hearing on a charge of having burglarized
the Gable hardware store early last Saturday morning when money and merchandise
amounting to $150 was stolen. Four knives, identified as stolen goods, were
found in his possession when arrested by Indianapolis detectives. Entrance was
gained through a skylight, Bedwell using a rope to let himself down. He left
the rope behind and by the knots in it, it was identified by another balloonist,
who had worked with Bedwell, as the kind of a tie made by the young aeronaut.
Bedwell's divorced wife lives in Indianapolis.
This note, from the "Nearby News" column in the Fort Wayne
News, 3 Feb 1911, might be about him:
Jimmie Bedwell pleaded guilty to robbing the Hartford City hardware store and
will in all probabilities be sentenced to a prison term of from one to fourteen
years. Owing to the sympathy felt for his parents a charge of grand larceny
was made instead of burglary.

courted a bride and trouble at the same time when he induced Hazel Logan, 18
years old, housekeeper for James Mullin, driver of a fire wagon, to elope with
him to Indianapolis, where they were married. Mullin, angered because of the
loss of his housekeeper, has filed a charge of intoxication against Bedwell,
which, if proven, is likely to send Bedwell back to the Jeffersonville Reformatory,
from which he is a paroled prisoner. Bedwell and his bride are now at Beech
Grove.
