"Alta L. Douglas, daughter of William C. and Amanda Birchfield Bonine, was born August 3, 1894 in Harper county, and passed from this life on January 9, 1976 at the age of 81. She had lived in the Holton community many years, moving here from Chanute in 1929.She was a member of the First Christian Church and Mary L. Bair Post N. 44 of the American Legion Auxiliary, both of Holton. She taught many years in the Sunday School of the Christian Church and found enjoyment in recent years quilting with the women of the First United Methodist Church.On July 5, 1917 she was united in marriage to Claude C. Douglass and to this union was born a son, Claude C. Douglass, Jr. She cooked for the prisoners in the Jackson County jail for many years while helping her husband in the maintenance of the jail. After her husband's death on March 27, 1951, Alta cared for many individuals across the community who were in need of loving care. She is survived by her son Claude C. Douglass, Jr. of Oxford, Alabama; a step-son, John J. Douglass of Houston, Texas; a sister, Mrs. Jessie Walker, of Oklahoma City, a brother, Claude Bonine, of Kansas City; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Burial was in the Holton Cemetery."
