S. Bedwell582 was
born about 1862 in Tennessee.582
He died between 1897 and Jun 1900.581
1900 Census for Calhoun County, Mississippi shows this family living in the residence
of Horton Dunn: his daughter, Ardena Bedwell, born Aug 1869 in Georgia, a widow
who has had five children with four still living; his granddaughter, Mary M.
Bedwell, born Jul 1888 in Georgia; his granddaughter, Nancy L. Bedwell, born
Jun 1890; his granddaughter Arty (?) Bedwell, born Jun 1895; and his grandson,
Robert G., born July 1898. The younger children were born in Mississippi. All
the children show their father as born in Tennessee.
Because of (a) John Anderson Bedwell, father of William Bedwell, being the only
other Bedwell in Calhoun County at this time, and (b) William Bedwell being the
only known child of John Anderson Bedwell who was of sufficient age and was born
in Tennessee, my guess is that Ardena was married to this same William Bedwell,
who was deceased before the census was taken in June 1900.
Did the census taker make a mistake? The third child is definitely listed as
female and the name looks like Arty, but it is scratched out and rewritten and
could be something else. The World War I draft registration records for Calhoun
County, Mississippi show a man named Alva Norman Bedwell, born 12 Oct 1895.
Could this be the same individual? Or does Alva belong to someone else who missed
being counted in the 1900 census?
