Fayetteville Observer, 7 February, 1867

Notice for the Fayetteville Observer

In looking over the columns of the Fayetteville Observer, I see my name published as a delegate to the Radical Convention at Nashville. I wish to say through the columns of the same paper, that my name was announced and used without my knowledge or consent; and further, if I understand the meaning of the word Radical, I am not nor cannot be a Radical. If I know my own Heart, I am a Union constitutional-subject. I am for a reunion upon constitutional principles. I cannot endorse Mr. Brownlow's motto. I may differ with some of my best friends; if I do it from pure principles and an honest heart. I look upon those that I differ with, as equally honest with myself, and beg only leave to disagree from principle, and let that principle be pure love for my country, and the propitiation of union, peace, and strength, etc. etc. What I have said above, I say with true regard and respect for all parties.

J.B. Bedwell

Same issue:

We ask attention to the card of Mr. Bedwell, in another column. He informs us that his name was used at the underground meeting, without his knowledge or consent--that he has no sympathy with Radicalism, but on the contrary, approves Pres. Johnson's patriotic course. How is it that the after-night conclave used so many names without authority? Can one tell? Perhaps the person who registered them can furnish the information.

Fayetteville Observer 21 February 1867

Mr. J.B. Bedwell, in a friendly note, informs us that we were in error in saying that he had "no sympathy for the "Radicals." We did not intend to allude to his social relations, of course. Our purpose was to announce that he had no political "sympathy for the Radicals." But we will give him the benefit of his own correction. He says:

"I did not say, nor did I intend to convey any such an idea. I only differ with them from principle, and that principle was pure love for my country, admitting them to be equally honest as myself. You say in your note or comment, that I informed you that my name was used without my knowledge or consent. This is true. I can't be a Radical for the life of me - no, never. But I have personal friends; yes, friends that have proved to the letter to be friends in deed and in truth. Then why should I say those hard things, being no politician, and hurt feelings of personal friends?"

Shortly after this appeared, John B., Sarah and the younger unmarried children moved to Cumberland City, Stewart County, Tennessee.

• Nancy appears in the 1870 census, but the Bayers did not include her among the known children of John B. and Sarah Ann Bedwell. According to the 1910 census, Sarah Ann Bedwell indicates that she had nine children, seven of them still living. Frances Elbert is deceased by then, but the others known to the Bayers are still alive. It is probable that Nancy Ann died at an early age. John B. Bedwell's obituary indicates that he and Sarah Ann had nine children.
