• Here is a letter from Cleland Bedwell to Robert Henry Bedwell, in reply to a genealogy inquiry:

Cleland R. Bedwell
704 McCraw St.
Clarksville, Tenn. 37040

April 14, 1967

Dear Dr. Bedwell,

In answer to your letter, dated March 29, 67, I'm afraid I don't have much, if any information that would help you in establishing the genealogy of the Bedwell family before the 1880's, but will be glad to tell you what I do know in case you can tie anything you might have in with it.

It is possible that my grandfather and your grandfather could have been second cousins.

My grandfather, Delmus Bedwell, was born in 1879 (Oct.), the year before your grandfather, and he is still living today at the grand old age of 87 years old. I talked to him about this matter but he has never known a Robert Scott Bedwell, and the only records he has are in his old family Bible that starts off with his father, John, but he told me this story which has been told down through our family. There were three brothers that came from Ireland (year unknown), they came together to the Tennessee River and there, one brother separated from the other two and went his separate way.

The two that stayed together, one was named Ullysis, my great-great grandfather, the others name is unknown, settled in a place called Coldwater, Kentucky (near Murray, Ky.), they never again heard from the brother that separated from them at the Tenn. River.

My great-great grandfather Ullysis had two sons, John and Archie, John was my great grandfather, his sons were Boyde, Basquim and Delmus, my grandfather, all were born in Kentucky.

If you do know of anything that might be connected with any of this I would appreciate very much in knowing about it.

As the Bedwell name is very uncommon, it is my belieft that all the Bedwell's are possible ancestors of these three brothers.

I have recently moved from Memphis and now live in Clarksville (Montgomery Co.), Tenn. However, there were other Bedwells living in Memphis that were not kin or known to me while I lived there, I am enclosing their addresses, taken from the telephone directory, in case you would like to contact them, perhaps some of these are of the family you are searching for.

(five names and addresses listed)

If you know, or should find out, just what happened to the brother that separated from the other two, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Cleland R. Bedwell
