P. Louis Dold arrived April 4, 1851 [ at
SS. Peter and Paul's Church at Cumberland, Md. ] He was
born October 28, 1821, in Belgium; come to America March 19, 1851: made
profess in the Order November 6. 1843; was ordained December 21. 1850, and died
December 29, 1882 in Philadelphia in the Convent of St. Peter. His prominence as
a linguist enabled him to accomplish much good among all classes. English,
Germans, French, Dutch, Italians, and Spaniards were alike benefited by his
vigorous activity for their spiritual wants. His genius for the art of drawing
and designing was greatly admired by all. It was he that not only designed but
also directed the work of the beautiful Gothic altar and pulpit. In the year
1858 he left Cumberland for St. Thomas, W. I., from whence he was sent to Chili
and Peru returning in his sixtieth year to the United States.
The arrival of Father Van de Braak, from Belgium to
Cumberland is noted in this [1852] year's records.
