Biography :

Alexander Vanderwilt (Vandervelt) alias Julius vandevelde:

- 4th New York Cavalry, age 51(?); enlisted August 29, 1861 at Yonkers, discharged for disability, March 1, 1862.
- 16th New York Cavalry; age 40(?); enlisted June 12, 1863 at Nashville; mustered in as Private Co. I September 2, 1863 to serve 3 years; appointed Sergeant, Sept. 2, 1863; discharged June 13 1865 for disability.

I find him in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania,  at Blockley Alm House in the 1880 census, a former surveyor, 71 y.o. He was admitted in the Soldiers' Home on March 24, 1885, stating being a surveyor suffering from dropsy, 74 y.o. This confirm he was born around 1810. A widower with nearest relative a Mr Sagons C. G. at 1680 Chesnut Street, Philadelphia. He was discharged at his own request on 18 November 1891. His pension card add he died February 20, 1903. No other information found.

Note: It was a detachment of the 16th New York who captured John Wilkes Booth and David E. Herold at Garrett’s Farm, near Port Royal, Virginia on April 26, 1865. Alexander Vandervelt is not listed as being with that detachment nor is he in the list of the men having received a reward for the capture of Booth. As a Sergeant, he would have received 208 $.
