Lucy died at the early age of 39 leaving 11 children motherless, and many of them were very small. Her baby was Bonnie Hyicinth York who was only 11 months old. Peyton appealed to his older sister Henrietta "Gertie" York Cost, and her husband Jim Cost to take his baby Bonnie home with them and care for her until he could make arrangements for her care.

Peyton moved around trying to follow the oilfield work in West Texas to feed and clothe his children. Several years passed before Peyton married again, and Bonnie was ten when he came to take her home. His brother-in-law, Jim Cost told him "Peyton, you've waited too long. She's ours now." Peyton and Jim were very close, and Peyton never said a word because he knew that Jim was right. (The foregoing information on Peyton was contributed by Reba Hall)
