The following recipes were sent in a letter from Emily Holland, King City, Missouri to Marie Bertran Trumbull, Tryon, Nebraska, first cousins, April 8, 1926.

Devil Food Cake
2 egg yolks
2 squares Bakers Chocolate
1 cup sweet milk
1cup sugar
1 2/3 cup flour
3 tablespoon melted butter
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon soda
No mixing or baking instructions given.
Carmel Cake
1/2 cup butter
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 cup water
2 1/2 cup flour
2 eggs
2 teaspoon baking powder
3 tablespoon carmel syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla
Separate the egg yolks from the
whites. Beat the egg yolks.
Cream butter, sugar and egg yolks together .Stir in the water and 2 cups of
the flour. Beat 5 minutes.
Then add carmel syrup, vanilla, half cup flour and beat again thoroughly.
Add baking powder and well beaten
egg whites.
Bake in two layers in a moderate oven.
To make carmel syrup, take a cup
of sugar and brown it good in a skillet.
Then add water to make a nice brown syrup.
